20 extra, uncalled for yards

Where did they come from?
Short par 5, drove it to the 200 yard marker. Decided I'd lay back and take 2 comfy gap wedges to the back of the green (100-105 club) where the pin was. So I let the first one go down the optimal side of the fairway, and when I got to the ball, the 100 yard maker was 20 yards behind me (accurate marker). I hit a full sand wedge instead, and I was fine, but that gap wedge went as far as my pitching wedge. It wasn't delofted, the whole ballflight was normal, high, and somewhat ballooning, totally normal. What did I do? Fluke? Help, its not the first time a wedge has sailed out of its own normal range on me.

Sometimes you really get a hold of one. It happens.

One time I was playing a par four, and after topping my drive about 100y, I figured I hit a 6i and then pitch on and take my bogey and go home. Well, much to my delight, I nutted that 6i about 210y (my normal carry is about 160y) and it rolled about 10ft from the pin. Sometimes you just catch the ball really well and goes far, far, far. That's what I suspect happen here...

Grass marks on a clean club dont lie man

uhhh...you can hit it thin and still hit grass....trust me, i've done it before. one of several things happened:

1. you got an adrenaline rush

2. you had a bad swing before and just happened to get it right that one swing

3. you thinned it.

figured the first two were obvious, so i suggested the third. 20 yards with a wedge is significant.

Yup...every once in a while everything goes exactly perfect. Don't get use to it!! hahahaha...I've done this before...I've also had days where I hit the ball a mile all day long...I can play the next day and be back to my usual short self...

Anybody else find that this seems to happen when you are hitting from a comfortable yardage? Example: your 9 iron distance is 140. You are 135 out hitting a smooth 9 iron and knock it 15 yards past the flag?

The higher lofted irons are easier to hit (for most people). Also, a majority of people with anything close to a halfway decent swing, will for some odd reason, swing a higher lofted club more relaxed. Thats the key to a good shot; just letting the clubhead do the work. Then the unthinkable happens: you pure that 9 iron for 140 yards.

But, as someone mentioned in a post above: Don't get used to it, unless you play on tour.

this happens to me as well. i think its the mental thought of "hit it nice and easy" that enables the smoothe swing with perfect contact, which should give you a longer, straighter shot. it happened to me last week. after a HORRIBLE pulled drive, i was 250 out and i thought, "hit a nice 8 iron to the 100 yard marker" and when i got to my ball, i was 85 yards away. no wind, pretty hot day with a little draw. a 165 8 iron is unheard of for me with that smoothe of a swing...

This is delofting the club. I am 99.9% positive. I did this today with my 80 yard club. I was 90 yards out so I thought I could deloft the face and get it there....well guess what happend.... I hit the ball 125 yards. This was on the 18th hole on my local course and this was during tryouts. I hit it right at the pin but it flew over the green, then over a tree that sits right behind the green and on to the practice putting greens which sit right behind the 18th green. Now to remind you guys, just about the whole entire team was watching. I go to the practice green to find my ball....now guess what...it sunk right into one of the practice green holes. It dropped right in. I was upset but to not let it get to me I had to laugh a little. Well my stories over but in general I think delofting the club did this to you.

P.S: I was hitting a 54* wedge.

If they grass got between the ball and the club, that would be a flyer. It would fly farther and have less spin so it would roll farther than normal. You could have just landed on a hard spot and got a big bounce. You could have delofted the club, so more distance. Lots of possible reasons.
