As a carnoustie member some of the comments here about mats are hilarious! We use mats at Carnoustie and St. Andrews from the start of November to the end of March. The ball sits slightly higher off the ground using them, but it’s nothing like the 2 inches someone above claimed, its more like playing of a tee. And you only have to use them on the fairway as well which unless you are a scarily good driver will probably only be 7-8 times anyway.

I also wouldn’t consider not using them. It’s quite disrespectful and if you got caught there’s every chance they would ask you to leave, especially on the old course.

So in short, don’t worry about the mats. They make next to no difference. Enjoy yourself and have a blast!

Don't take a caddie, then it's mats only for the 1st and 18th lol. Plus you're on WRX so the 18th is a tight draw 3W, 340 with 19 yards roll to centre cut pin. No mat required.

As some of the other posters say...the Old course is something every keen golfer should do...if you are playing when matts are in play then as some of the others say play from the semi rough/sides of the fairways ;)

One of the signal pleasures of links golf is hitting iron shots off fine, firm links turf. My travel budget is extremely limited (in terms of both time and money) and I would not care to waste one of my few remaining UK trips by forgoing that key part of the experience.

I still have daydreams about one 5-iron I hit at Birkdale, the feel and sound of impact on that shot and a few others like it over the years will never be far from my thoughts when remembering UK golf holidays.

Royal Dornoch is sumptuous. Might be horrible if our rain continues but the views are something else.

I'm booked there next June, can't wait - along with St A - Old/New/Jub package + North Berwick...and extended family along for castles, whisky, etc - Dad doesn't golf anymore...but he loves his whisky!

I totally respect that it is your home course but I wouldn't pay to play off of mats. Absolutely no way Jose!

Totally pointless playing off of mats as a visitor, ruins the experience and fun.
