The worst courses AZ

i never played the little course they had there, but i practiced a ton on that range...the grass was always good, a ton of targets, putting green was great...and they added a covered misting system that made it pretty darn comfortable in summer...the best range of all time!

man, i bought a lot of stuff there...lol

Rio Rico is the worst course I have played in AZ. I remember the fairways being way too grown out and there was also an insect problem.

 

As far as El Rio goes, it did host the very first Tucson Open. I enjoy playing there, perhaps I am not good enough to recognize bad. It is flat, for sure. I found that I actually could hold a few greens this weekend from 150 or so out. Now the week before reseed, you could not hold anything, but that's not a shock with no water in them!

 

I guess maybe I've just never played El Rio when it was in good shape, so my view is very skewed by that. It does have a deep history and if I'm not mistaken, someone told me that back in its hay day it had something like close to (or over) 230 bunkers throughout the course. If it's in good shape, I'll give it a shot.

They don't overseed the fairways (though they paint them) so right now they are dormant Bermuda, which I don't find a bad thing. The greens are generally in good condition, I'm sure they are too slow for some, and too fast for others. Bunker are very much hot or miss. They are in the process of removing two of them (GUR now) that I guess were more trouble than benefit.

 

I enjoy the course, as a not very good golfer. I got tired of the dessert courses where off the fairway was often lost in the desert. It's not a big thing, but I also think the staff is great, and always friendly.

Arizona Golf Resort is my choice for top of the list. Not only for the course itself, but the Vans store next to it has been permeated by AGR’s quality and is now also a no go. It’s so hard to mess up a hat selection and they somehow did. Plus a great variety of expensive used sets, old inventory of clothes, etc

I thought Arizona Golf Resort was under new management and conditions were much improved?

 

The park my folks live in used to play out of there and since have moved to Western Skies.

 

I never minded the layout and really enjoyed 16-18, thought that was a strong finish.

Have to chuckle, read back through this thread from the beginning. It seems like several of the courses we’re talking about playing in a couple weeks are making this list. We have no standards.

(FYI, of the other three city courses here in Tucson, the two center city courses, Randolph North and Del Urich, used to host, at various times, PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events; the sleeper is the East end's Fred Enke course.

Back in 1997....my wife and I played Randolph North...what a GOAT TRACK....ugly, boring and surrounded by a steel fence....they must have renovated it....I don't know how they fit in 6900 yards....I don't recall it playing much more than 6300 yards back then.

The clubhouse...if that's what you called it...was an old run down sh*t hole...how it hosted PGA & LPGA events is beyond me.

 

On the drive up to Phoenix we played some burnt out dirt field of a course in Eloy, AZ????

That would be the now closed San Miguel, but it might have had a different name then. You can't even tell it was a golf course now. A few of the posters mentioned it a few pages back.

 

Randolph is far from a goat track now, usually in the best shape of all the city courses. Heard that OB Sports did a solid job when they took over but I haven't been playing long enough to know what it was like before then.

This is subjective at best. Every golfer with different golf levels will appreciate different courses. Yes .... some are obvious dog tracks. Some are over-priced, but if they still exist in this new economy ... then they are appealing to someone.

 

Another observation. Lots of hate for Quintero. Yes ... it is penal. Probably the reason I like it so much. I am a low mid hp at best. I play maybe once a week. I love betting with the low caps at Quintero. A hard, penal course gives me a chance. Although I probably lose more often than I win. LOL.

 

Kierland: it's resort golf. That's it. Great conditions. Great staff. Tee to green is simple. Greens are very fast and provide a good test of putting. Not over-priced if you have a Troon card.

 

Boulders: again. Resort golf with great views and staff. Gotta have the Troon card.

 

Rancho Manana: not my favorite. Holes are just odd. Lots of blind shots.

 

My point is this list is very subjective and opinionated which is the point of a forum .... I guess.
