Going Old School - 8802

I've always tried to copy early Mickelson with my putting - with the ball off the front foot and a forward press, and used the Yonex mentioned earlier in this thread for nearly 20 years on and off - I always tried more conventional putters, but I just didn't hole as many as I do with the Yonex. For a testing downhill 5 footer I still don't think there's a putter I'd rather use.

Only issue I had with it is the chrome finish is a nightmare in sunny weather, so am currently using a California Del Mar - not quite as much feel as the Yonex but a touch more forgiving (and less shiny), but the Yonex will definitely be in the bag again at some point.

Great style of putter, and a great way to make sure you are executing the strokes properly.

Recently got the newer version of the 8802. Everything about it is classy. Lovely feel in the hands. So far so good with it. Won't be leaving the bag for a very long time!

I love the feel as well. All that meat in the topline and behind the ball is like a muscle back blade. It feels like butter when putting.

picked up a odessey 8 black x and wow does this thing putt nice. just might be my fav 8802 style in the stable. 20$ well spent it came with a huge supperstroke 3 on it which is just about the worst choise in grips you can make for this style putter. you want every ounce of feedback with these and only a thin girip provides

Being left eye dominate and pulling my putts, it was suggested by many OEMs I to go a toe hang putter. I like min. to no aiming lines, therefore liking the looks of 8802 style putters. Looking at Wilson and Ping Sigma Tess for this yr.

Golf64 take a look at the Tad Moore tour classic (the barn finds are nice) and the bb2 bettinardi. Just a couple more options.

OMG - putter porn.

Anyone roll the new Sigma G Tess?

I have only rolled one in the shop on carpet a few different times. The new Ping Tess is a larger version of an 8802 with insert. It's a cross between an 8802 and a #9/Del Mar when considering the head size. It is a great value and forgiving yet still has the feel/feedback that is desired.

I'm a lefty. Last year, I've been putting righty, definitely more consistent, especially on short putts. I've been using a righty Ping type putter, that was gold plated with a Babcock and Wilcox company logo. I worked for the company back in the 1970's, and found the putter in a Goodwill ($2). Whoever got this putter originally, HAD to be a real aristocrat. The department I worked, you had to turn in a Sharpie to get a new one. Still, the supervisor would check to see if the old still had any ink left. You guarded the Sharpies with your life. Anyhow, I digress, Probably, not a very good putter for actual play, but I putted pretty well with it.

Ordered a used RH Ping Pal 2i putter the other day. Waiting patiently for it to arrive, although there is at least 8 inches of snow on the ground. If I putt as good or better, we'll see. If not, the wife inherits a putter.

PS: Nail polish works as a cheap finish on my beat up B&W putter. I painted mine pink, like Bubba's driver. Nail polish holds up quite well.

Winter, go away!

Going back to an 8802 style putter....my arms just hang more comfortably than with a plumber's neck (maybe mental).

While I have an original Palmer and a couple of original 8802's, I'm gaming a Cleveland Designed by (Crenshaw) as a) it is very heavy and b) I just don't want one of my originals stolen. (One was used by a fairly well known tour player).

Will report back after I play a few rounds with the Cleveland.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
