I recently noticed a set of custom Button-back Staff's currently for sale on Craigslist in Austin, TX.

No financial interest, just thought if someone were in the market that these might be of interest. They have a custom stamp, and do not have the fluid-feel bore through. Interesting looking set, but they are too far away for me to pursue. Good luck to those who may be interested.

Thanks for posting these interesting pictures. If I was closer I would grab those. The lack of the "Fluid Feel" is weird enough on it's own but those soles... unless my eyes deceive me they are much more rounded than stock and seem to have a blunted leading edge, much like many of the more modern blade grinds. My Scratch blades have a similar grind. Very cool!

Very nice set of custom ground 1971 Wilson Staff "Buttonback" Dynapower irons.

61S497? Most likely a set for a Wilson Staffer under contract, who knew what they wanted. Have a few "S" series custom Wilson Staff models.

This set has exceptional blade progression, from the 2 iron down to the PW. One of Wilson's master grinders for sure.

No club face photos? Shame.

The leading edge feature you speak of became part of the Staff Tour Blade model. The "Fluid Feel" hosel was gone then as well

Hmmm... We note the absence of a custom ground Wilson Sand Wedge..

..Some clubs never came out of the bag....

More information likely in the Wilson custom 3 ring binders....somewhere.

Wish those were near me. Perfect hard to find grind on those older blades!

Very nice. You want to get that out on the course and see if it qualifies for cross posting in the favourite butterknives thread.

This is true of all second hand forgings, but especially so at the sharp end of the loft spectrum. You might want to get the loft checked. I took delivery of a set of Muirfields towards the end of last year. It was cheaper to buy the whole set just to get the included 1 and 2 irons than I've typically spent chasing down single irons in the past. Anyway, the 2 iron got immediate use, but the 1 iron sat in the box until now as course conditions are firming up. So this weekend I took it to the range and was hitting weak lobs even off the deck. Got it home and measured it at 23*, which is something like 5* and 2 clubs weak compared to factory specs. No sign of the club having been adjusted in the past - but these things do clearly get out of whack.

bs,

You are certainly correct about “never trusting” the specs on older clubs.

Dropped the above one off yesterday afternoon to have the shaft changed and a new grip put on. Didn’t have anything long enough I could use around the house.

The owner of the place said he had been a Wilson Staffer for 40 something years, and told me not to worry, he’d have it setup as it should be.
