Help Me Understand Loft Changes with Adjustable Drivers

Stuart. The question I asked about grip alignment changing was in reference to bending a fixed hosel for loft.

Sorry, missed that.

I do see what your saying with a cog system. I see how that could in a sense rebuild the hosel to a position that's same bending it. In theory. My disconnect maybe more with the Taylor made type adjustments. Which mizuno is the same.

Good, I was hoping the cog system would be easier to "see" what's happening. But they all do the same thing, they just use a different mechanism to achieve the results in a different way. The TM shaft is not aligned with the actual axis of the sleeve. So when you rotate the adapter, the shaft axis travels around in a conical path. That's why the 180* position is the same loft as the std position but more upright. One side of the cone (face side) increases loft - the tail side of the cone decreases loft (and all a bit more upright as well).

Think of it this way. (don't actually do this unless you have a junk shaft hanging around, just try to picture it). Take an iron shaft that's in an iron head but not glued in. Now instead of bending the hosel, bend the shaft right above the hosel a visible amount - say 5-10*. Now just rotate the shaft round in the hosel to different positions and think about what happens to the loft and lie angle. The problem with the TM (and other) adapters is that it's only 1-2* 'bend' so it's very hard to see directly.

I'm open minded and would love to be wrong. Why ? I'd love to be able to turn loft down in Driver and see some spin reduction and flight control for my Driver swing that is working toward a neutral or slightly positive AOA. When I hit down on the ball -4 it seems like 9-10 degrees was ok. But lately it just isn't. But I've yet to see any evidence of this. I've spent many hours on range with multiple drivers adjusting and just don't see any launch angle changes that are measurable. Most of the time on trackman. Therefore my 3 wood and Driver have always been set at neutral. Mainly because I prefer a neutral to slightly open face. Not cranked way open like it is when loft supposedly goes down.

The reason you haven't seen loft adjustments lead to a lower flight on Trackman, is because you don't want to hold the face angle at the same angle that it was, before you made the adjustment.

You prefer to let the head sole where it wants to....and that will not work for bending/adjusting loft on drivers, woods, hybrids.

Same thing with putters. The putter in your avatar has a "face angle" if measured in a spec gauge. If you walked into the Scotty Cameron tour facility and told them you would like the loft lowered 2* on your putter,.....they would clamp it square in the bending unit and push the hosel in the same direction we do for lowering loft on irons....

The difference is that most putters have a wide enough and flat enough soling surface, which creates an angle in how it wants to sit on it's own.....known as the "face angle". Most modern irons don't have this, because either the sole is too narrow and/or they have leading and trailing edge grinds, which create a narrow touch point....so no "face angle"....we can't measure these for face angle.

So if you had your putter adjusted 2* for loft, you would not be able to rest it on the green and have it sit the same on it's own, as you did before. You would need to "hold" the face where you want it. Same thing for any club that has a "face angle" or a position that it wants to sit in

I find this subject nauseating. Is there anyone who really doesn’t sole their Driver ? Not even for an instant before hovering ? I truly think it’s a Farse. And it deprived us of truly low lofted heads . Used t be you could buy a 7.5 or 8.5 head. Now it’s nearly always tour only.

Example. Mizuno. Jpx900. Had it a while back . Speeder 757x. By al accounts low launch low spin shaft. Take this head and adjust the loft all the way down to 7.5. And on trackman the launch angle and spin wouldn’t drop an ounce unless I purposefully teed it low and hit down on it. How I wish All heads were made both adjustable and glued.

Agreed! I hate that you can’t find heads under 8.5* anymore. I understand if they have to be ordered but to only find “tour issued” low loft heads for a bunch of money is rough.
