4 Club Tournament

What to use?
I'm playing in a four club tournament tomorrow and wondering what you guys have used in these kind of tournaments. I'm thinking driver, 5 iron, PW, and putter. I'm set on taking a putter. I can putt well with a wedge, but would rather have the putter.

I found that the best combo for me (which is very much like yours) is Driver, 7-iron, 46º wedge, and Putter. For the majority of par fours, you can reach with a Driver/7-iron, say the average par 4 is 390 yards, you hit your drive 265, you have a wedge in, but if you don't hit one out there, you have a little 7-iron from yardages 135-165. Par-5's you can usually reach with a driver, and two 7-irons. If you miss the green, you have a PW bump and run for your pitch or chip, a putter for obvious reasons. The ONLY place that I found difficult was par threes, especially the longer ones, it really puts stress on distance control. It is really how your course is set up, that is what determines what the best iron is to bring.

It looks like you have it pretty much figured out, but I know there will be some interesting views towards this question.

Good luck, Bryan :pimp:

Don't take driver.

Go with:

3 wood (so you can hit it off the deck too)

6 iron (you can choke down and hit knock down shots with it and its in between the 5 and 7)

SW or PW (I would rather have a SW out of greenside bunkers or shortsided flop shots)

Putter

I had one of these at a fun day at our club. I went with hybrid, 7 iron, 52* + putter. Shot 2-under for 9 holes better ball between 3 of us.

Titleist TS2 16.5° w/ Tensei AV 65 Stiff

One of the major things to consider are the Par 3's on your course. If you have alot of long par 3's (over 180 from your tees) then you may want to take a 5 wood or utility as your tee club, or stick with 3 wood and take a 5-6 iron instead of a 7 iron. I definitely would forget about driver, and unless your a pretty good putter I'd leave it out as well.

I won one of these at my club a few years back. I carried a 3 iron, 7iron, gap wedge, putter. We were playing from the whites. All the pins were in the middle of the greens. I was a 11hdcp at the time. Shot a net 66. I got a lot of grief that day. If we were playing from the blues I would've put a 5w in play instead of the 3iron.

I've made my final decisions:

3 wood(because I got it last night and want to hit it all day tomorrow :pimp: )

5 iron

pitching wedge

putter

Kyle good call. The only other consideration is the course. If you need your driver to hit it far enough . Also, how often do you use the three wood, four times that is if there are 4 par fives. What do you lose with the three wood off the tree. Are there any par fours over 465, then you might change your mind, by the way what new three wood did you get?

Kyle traded me straight up on the range the other day. I gave him my Cleveland launcher comp 15 W/YS-7 SX for his Bridgestone j33 W/ Fuji TRTI-46. The funny thing is he just bought the J33 and got it in the mail 20 minutes before we traded.... :pimp:

I have to agree w/ your choices, i would have been torn between a 5 or 6 iron, but i think you have made the right choices. good luck!!!!!!!!!!

You know you have to give a report on how you did.

WHAT!?! Kyle your crazy! I just got a J33 and it's the best three wood ever! Plus the TRTI-46 is only one of the best fairway wood shafts ever! That combo is SICK.

You nut Kyle... :D

I took a different approach at the last one of these and this method worked really well for me.

4h Hybrid

7 iron

PW

LW

For me the 4h hybrid is a solid 200 yard club. For the 400 yard Par 4's I'd take two full swings. The 380 yard Par 4's I could hit two choked down 4h's and hit the green. SHorter Par 4's I'd have a 4h and then a 7 iron to the green. The 550 Par 5 was two 4h shots and a 7 iron into the green. If you are like me and the 4h Hogan Hybrid is an automatic money club playing this way is a big advantage because you are hitting so many shots with just the one club. It's almost like hitting at a driving range after you groove the swing in of one club. I did all my putting with it as well. Sure I would miss a lot of greens approaching it from 150-200 yards but I was always around the greens so I just relied on getting it up and down. The stupid thing is I actually shot a little better then my average this way instead of shooting worse then average as most would expect. Next time I do it I think I'll drop the PW and LW for a SW and putter.

If it's me,

hybrid -- long off the tee, versatile for shots other than the tee if I need distance

7 iron -- works for up to 160 yards, can be easily used to control different shots

SW -- works for up to 100 yards, works for greenside bunkers

putter -- I need to putt!

Anyway, let us know how you did in the tournament and what the winner and the runner up used, if possible.

I've played this format many times. I had a club league that had crazy events every year, and a college coach that had us practice in different formats. Consider the distance of the par 3s and try to carry a club that you can use for all of them. Also I'd suggest carrying your highest lofted wood/hybrid or your lowest lofted iron (depending on what you're more comfortable with). These types of tournaments come down to hitting the fairway, and then trying to get it near the green or right around it. Carry a wedge you're comfortable with and which you have a lot of confidence in from that weird 60-20 yard range yet that you also feel comfortable with chipping. What ever you do, don't leave the putter at home. I have probably played in 10+ 3-5 club events and I can only think of once when a member won without his putter. The majority of your strokes will be on the green, so you might as well have the club best suited for it.

Rough go today. Shot 83. We played from way up at 6200. The course was in horrific shape, and the pins were in the stupidest spots you could ever imagine.

I played:

3 wood

6 iron

Pitching Wedge

Putter

If I could do it again I'd take driver instead of 3 wood. If I took driver I would have been hitting wedge into the greens anyways. Oh well.
