Fitting an average 11 yr old

My son has played for 3 years, but only a few times a summer and some practice balls out back. He's no prodigy.

He's 58" tall and @ 90lbs. Average strength, plays all sports.

Driver is around 160 yds.

Womens flex safer bet than sr?

A true Jr shaft seems too soft.

Do I want a heavier or lighter than normal putter head?

I'm not afraid to buy old/used/new or whatever for him. He's not in tournaments or seeking a tour card. I just want to help him learn and have fun with it, so I can play more too.

I will try and be preemptive with some help here. Without knowing his current equipment, his swing speed, or the way he swings you are asking for pretty blind advice. The biggest thing you need is his swing speed as that will determine what flex he needs more than a simple distance statement as far as shafts go.

I'll guess it's around 65 based on the distance.

As I said, hes playing for fun and I am just looking to prevent anything from making it not fun. I'm guessing softer shafts are better than stiffer for his age so I'd err to the Ladies flex side.

He plays a Cobra kids set that is now too short.

It's the internet. We are all blind! Haha

Two ways you can go. You could go with a junior set of clubs made by Flynn or US Kids. Both companies make great clubs. Us Kids has the fitting chart and your son would fall into the 57” set. Flynn custom makes them to the specs you give him but they end up being the same length as what US Kids makes their clubs. The big selling point for Flynn is he customizes everything. Your son can pick the shaft and grip color and some kids love that. Normally I would say he is right on the edge of needing OEM adult irons cut down to his specs. The only issue is that it will cost you a good bit of money and if your son isn’t playing all that much, you are probably better off with Flynn or US Kids.

At 65 mph swing speed and that short, I would go with US kids or Flynn junior clubs. Ladies clubs are going to be too long. Shaft flex for ladies should be somewhere between 70-75 for a junior. 5 mph may seem close, but it isn’t.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

I got my hands on some lighter weight iron heads. They were from a 12 yr old Junior and they are bored out to .370 diameter. I also have a Wilson Triton driver head that can be changed from 186-200 gram with weights and sole plates.

I was thinking of using the softest ladies flex I could find. You think I'd be smarter to use a Jr. flex?

I can always reshaft them next year if need be.

As I said, I'm not fitting a tour player but I am an equipment geek so I'm probably putting more effort into it than necessary.

I would call Mike Flynn at Flynn golf. He fits juniors all the time and can lead you in the right direction.

I didn't realize fitting for kids has gotten so complex. When my son started playing, I simply purchased some USA Kids Clubs appropriate to his height.

US Kids Clubs are great clubs and I did the same thing. When I knew that he needed something more than US Kids metal woods I just bought him the lightest adult OEM club I could find that was used in a senior flex. Cut it down to US kids specs and said "Here you go."

I got a set of Tm300 iron heads made to light weights from a clubmaker. He said they would be great for his age, so I'm going to get shafts for them. It's an opportunity to build a set for cheap, and he's thrilled they say Taylor Made.

I just want sure if Jr. or ladies flex would be best. I'm thinking I will just try Jr shafts

Sounds good! It seems kids have a lot more opportunities for equipment these days...which is a good thing. :-)

Instead of a fitting, give him his own membership on GolfWRX. Shortly his average drive will be 326 and his average 7 iron will fly 210.

You would think so! But I've been on this site for years and I'm still only 260 off the tee. I must have missed the kool aid or a membership due somewhere.

Are you playing SGI clubs?

Sgi, blade, "players" cavity. I've played them all per WRX requirements.
