Hogan Set from Estate Sale

For $12 I snagged a set of Ben Hogan irons and woods in Ben Hogan Burton Bag at an estate sale this morning.

 

The irons are 2 through 9, an Equalizer wedge and a Walter Hagen "Sand Iron" R-5. Serial No on 5 iron is C27194. From looking online, these appear to be 1966/67 - would that be right?

 

The Woods are 1, 3, 4 and 5 with the "Speed Slot". There are four screws on the face that form sort of an upside "Y". Serial Number for the 4 wood is the easiest to read; it looks like B84391.

 

The bag appears to be in okay shape. The zippers work, no tears, etc.

 

There also was several older balls, a ball retriever and a pair of Hush Puppy suede golf shoes. The shows look absolutely uncomfortable to wear. They will probably end up in the trash.

 

The intriguing item in the bag is "Old Dead Eye" Putter see last two pics). The top (when looking down at address), is a guy in a coffin. Appears to be an old west lawman with a star on his jacket. The shaft band says "Novella Putters"; "Mader Products, PO Box 3092, Torrence Cal. 90510. Looks like a novelty type putter.

 

Am I correct on the year of the irons? Are the woods and bag about the same time period? Anyone have any information on the putter?

 

I have some stray Hogan irons, most from the 1980/1990's. Thanks in advance for any info provided.

You've picked up an excellent set. The irons look like they have a long hosel which would make them 1966 Improved Percussion Center irons. That was the top of the Hogan line back then. The woods are laminated (the DuraPly) decal on the back and are probably from 1966 also. The red/blue/red tape above the whipping matches the colors of the ferrules on the irons. 1966 was the first year for the inverted "Y" screw pattern on the inserts. This is all according to the GolfWorks club ID book. I have a set of the same irons but mine are 1967 models with a slightly shorter hosel. I use to play a set of these back in the late '60's. Once you got use to them they were a great set of irons. There is no bounce on the sole which takes a little practice to learn to hit properly.

Measure the Hosel. If they're 3" they're 65/66, if 2 1/2" they're 67's. Nice irons but I've never been crazy about those woods.

Great find. Those irons are excellent, in my opinion. I had a set of the 1967 PC's (known as PC7) with those same shafts. Now have a set of the 1964 PTIII's which are very similar in design (blade on blade).

Thanks all! It was nice to find a complete set with the all of the same serial numbers. The hosel measures 3" on the hogans. Here are pics of the Hagen sand iron.

Hush puppies, absolutely without any uncertainty the sure sign of a duffer. Never saw a decent golfer wear a pair, LOL.

 

I'd be tempted though to take the spikes out and wear them around the neighborhood, assuming they fit.

 

And hit those old balata imploded balls, they should "explode" on impact, LOL.

[Ironmaster Oddities]

The logo and sole stamp on the Sand Iron leads me to believe that it is older than the Hogan Set. Pre-Haig Ultra models. That might put it back into the 1950's or earlier. Great looking club. virtually no wear. on face or sole. Is the shaft chrome or pyratone sheathed?

My very first full set of Walter Hagen "The Haig" (Ultra) irons were very close to the same year as this 1953-54 Walter Hagen 8-5 Sand Iron.

 

They had this same crest, and large "Walter Hagen" signature stamp.

 

These Walter Hagen Sand Irons, like the Wilson Top Notch Dyna-Weights, were without the drill-thru hosel, but both were sought after by good bunker players.

 

Very nice profile.

 

 

 

 

It is pre Ultra-Powered (1958) Sand Iron, with "Fluid Feel" drill-thru hosel.

 

All very nice finds, in exceptional condition.
