In Case You're Wondering if Maridoe is a Tough Course

They just played the Texas Four-Ball there this past weekend and the winning score was 4 under. And it appears that they DID NOT play the tips. I believe someone on here played in it so maybe they will further enlighten us.

Pretty course, must be tough. Two of the championship players are Panhandle guys. Represent!

I played in the event. We missed the cut. The course is unbelievably penal. If you miss the fairway, you have the first cut for 5 feet, then intermediate rough for about 10 feet, then you're in a natural area where you're lucky if you find your ball. There are no bail out spots on the course. The greens are large, fast, and very undulated. Hitting the green does not mean a par. To add to all this, we had 20 mph sustained winds and gusts of up to 40. It is an incredible course, but it is mentally taxing to play it. You have to focus on every single shot. Missing on the wrong sides of the hole or green is an automatic bogey.

When I see a pair of plus handicaps shooting 80-82 best ball, then you know you've crossed the line into stupid, hard golf territory. A hard golf course is not necessarily a good golf course...

20-40 mph winds will make just about any course unplayable, let alone one with 25-30 yd wide fairways and trouble everywhere. Must have been pretty frustrating.

 

But my question is, what about the members. Those narrow fairways and tough greens don't get much easier at shorter distances.

 

Incidentally, I played there back in the '90s when it was still Columbian. It was an easier track then and definitely not 7800+!
