Anyone remember the old Matzie Swing Trainer?

Does anyone remember the old Matzie Swing Trainer? It had a bend in the shaft and the head was sort of an outline of a clubhead. I think they were supposed to teach the release, maybe not. How were they supposed to work? How did they help?

If I wasn’t out of town I’d take a quick photo of mine. Still swing at times for rhythm and tempo. Also has a special grip to reach release, oversized head that adds weight. Yes I’m old, and old-school!

I still have one from when dad bought it for me in the early 90's. Still use it daily. Between the molded grip and weighted head design it does cause a release/almost flip just past the impact zone. I see the SuperSpeed line and wonder how Matzie is much different or the Orange Whip. I still put a solid hard hit at 40 years young and contribute most of that to swinging this on a regular basis. Start slow (almost slow motion) and work up to coming out of my shoes with it. Haven't used it on radar but a good swing I'm up around 90mph (driver is 106-110).

I'm old school too still. I still hit the middle of the ball with a sand wedge if needed around the greens in a thicker lie, no 3 wood bumps here.

So is the idea behind Matzie to teach a flip?

I have one, I just don't understand what it's supposed to do.

It is a training club with a heavily weighted head. The configuration of the shaft essentially forces one to pronate after the bottom of the swing. I think that it is a great practice device -- better than the Orange Whip.

The trail hand, right if you are right handed, rotates, closing the club face. If the right hand does not rotate or rotate enough the result is a slice. The Matzie is designed to ingrain the feel and prevent slicing.

This was the first swing aid I found that gave a good feel for a proper release.

I am defining "release" as the process by which the right (trail) hand (assuming a right-handed golfer) rotates over the left hand. You can replace the comparison of left and right hand, with left and right forearm, and the same thing applies.

The question is WHEN this rotation happens. With a flip, the process is starting prior to impact. A slice CAN occur because of the lack of release (or perhaps a release that occurs so late as to not have an effect). A proper release occurs soon after impact, as a result of the momentum generated from good technique.

Because of the weight of the head in the Matzie, and the bent shaft, the feel of the release is amplified. It spoke to me on what a good release should feel like and when in the swing it should happen.

I had one years ago. Every time I see one and pick it up, I think I should surf the 'bay to grab one again. Its a simple tool that works.

Still have one, it helps with releasing the club properly...my kids used it when they were learning to play.

Used to live in a townhouse, made 100 swings every night in front yard with mine back in the day. Neighbors thought I was nuts.

Have an Orange Whip now and a back yard but still go back to the Matzie for training from time to time for old times sake. Neighbors here also think I'm nuts but now for other reasons.

Just came across one and have been playing around with it...dug up this old thread.  It does more than just help with the release and be a weighted club warm up club. I noticed it forces you into a neutral position at the top (face not opened or shut).  I might use it daily for a while and see what happens...
