MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

Here's some analysis no one asked for, but whatever. it's New Years Eve. I got my Garmin G10 recently and it has "odometer" on it. I figure it just pings GPS every few seconds. So, I've tried to measure how far walking a course really is using google maps, but it's kind of tricky. You don't know how close you actually get.

Anyway, the odometer for Waverly, Turf and UMD has now come out between 7.5 and 7.8 miles for any of those courses. This is keeping it in my pocket, not on the pushcart. Also, keep in mind, I'm measuring how much I'm actually walking, so I'm turning it on when I get out of my car (if I remember, which I don't always), and turning it off when I get back to my car.

Given that a 7000 yard course is roughly 4 miles, I was kind of incredulous that you'd get an incidental 3.5 miles just out of transfers and meandering around. It can't be that much, right. Almost double??

But, then, I went into google maps and really clicked around like I was playing a hole. I walked 8 yards from push cart to the tee, couple yards around the ball, 8 yards back to cart, had to walk to the side of a drainage ditch, walk to the rough. When I got to the green, I walked my bag around the green (green radius = 30 yards, 40 if you count outside the bunker, C=2*pi*40 = 80 yards, divide by 2 since you only went halfway = 40 yards). Now. walk back to ball (20 yards), play a chip, walk to the ball (20 yards). walk to the pin to read the putt (10 yards), back to the ball. putt, walk to the pin, get the stick, exit the green. And when I do that, I've clicked my way up to almost 700 yards walking on a 400 yard hole. Sure, sometimes you play a hole just as straight as the yardage (possibly less on a dog leg, but just as likely MORE on a dogleg), but also sometimes you need to walk back to a tee, walk around a hazard, help someone look for a ball, etc etc. And, you're always walking around the green, which really adds up.

So, that right there gives you that 7/4 ratio per hole that gets you from 4 miles (course length) to 7 miles walking. But, that's just playing a hole. If you average 50 yards per transfer (plus time spent practice green, walking back and forth to car, etc), you're looking at another 18*50 = 900 yards = .51 miles.

Anyway, I figured the gps was way off when I was seeing 7.5 miles. 7.5 is what I figured I walk when I played Bandon or Bethpage, but I've seen it 3 times now, dug into it a little deeper and I'm starting to think that number is accurate. I think Hoop didn't have mileage on Saturday, but he said maybe 12,000 steps, or something, which, at a yard per step, would work out to 7 miles.

I use a garmin vivoactive 3 smart watch. It shows all my movements on a map. 7.5 mi at woodmore, though you can see I turned it off after driving away, so maybe it's really 7. 7 to 7.5 is pretty standard, I find.

It also shows all sorts of other stats, including heart rate.

The zoomed in pic shows holes 1-3 and part of 4. 0abb9bb0b83f24d55a4582d5d615f759.jpgd5d5aa981f2eb624d16ec8a64dea10f2.jpg67ecd6a4318d4a058c4022187a54e73d.jpgacff1c4863deb7cf9e170ff3ea72ccfe.jpg

Not golf related but I need help with a question. Audi S4 or Mercedes c43? Then should I go new or a slightly used? Help....

Well. If you’re open to buying new or used the answer is neither car and used. With that type of car you get a massive reduction in price for very little mileage and only a year or two old. Way back in the day I got an A4 for 55% of sticker two years old with 20k miles. So get a used CLS (for example) for less than you’d pay for either car you proposed new.

CLS53 is a very nice ride, but too long. I like the smaller 4 door sedans. I had a 2001 A4 at one point and loved it, but a manual. Also had an 85” 4000s in manual as well. Never had an MB.

Anyone interested in a one and done golf pool? I have 7 so far. Looking to get it to ten plus.

Golf pick em format:

Pick one golfer each week. You can only pick a golfer once the whole season. You get your golfer’s $ winnings as points. Most points wins.

$103 buy in. Golf year (Sentry TOC - Tour Championship) divided into 4 quarters. Scoring breakdown as follows:

Year Long Winner = 40% of pot

Quarterly Winner = 10% of pot

Major Winner = 5% of pot.

So if 10 guys join, $400 to the season long guy, $100 per quarter, $50 per major

How many events? I have the attention span of a gnat.

From this weekend through the tour championship. So basically every remaining event in the 2018-2019 pga tour season.

As far as attention span, the beauty is you log in once a week, pick a guy, root for him when watching, rinse, repeat. No salary cap. No multiple players. The site figures out who you have left over to pick from and stack ranks them. It’s pretty cool.

Go Audi. That Mercedes c43 is a very old model and you wont like the style.

If youre going Audi at least get the s5 and not s4

the C43 has only been out since 2017 under the w205 design. The C class has been out since 1993 under the W202 generation. The S5 has lower headroom in the back seat and won’t work for my 6 foot son. The S5 has the same engine as the 4, but the 4 is lighter and quicker. Both the S4 and the c43 hit 0-60 in about 4.4. Pretty darn quick.

I appreciate it homie

I can PayPal for 2more since I'm in.

I hope I can set my picks in advance for the season and then just adjust as the year goes along.

Happy New Year everyone. The only resolution I care anyone here makes is to golf better this year.

I closed the new year (in part) by playing fortnite for the first time ever with a 10 year old. Seems appropriate for 2018.

We played a game last night called "what do you meme?" where you have all these famous meme photos and cards that you caption them with and the judge picks the best caption. Except when we started one of the kids was playing and some of the captions were things like "when she says 'more daddy' but you're all out of d***."

And that was a TAME one.

We had to start pre-screening.

I was confused with the c43 that came out in the early 2000s that was a boxy version before the c63 V8 version.

No. The captions were written on cards.

The thing is, the game had two decks of captions. One seemed to be very adult and one was less dirty. "when your mom find you plying video games instead of studying!"

But we just didn't realize it when we started. The guy had got the game for Christmas and had never played it.

I signed up for the one and done pool. Looking forward to it. I’ve been wanting to do one for the past couple of years. Let me know where to PayPal.

Thanks to all that recommended Eagle Rare. Found a bottle at the liquor store yesterday for $30. The Old Fashioned’s were a huge hit at our NYE party last night.

City you can’t set your picks ahead of time because the fields aren’t finalized. I think the system waits until Monday afternoon after the Monday qualifier to make the players available to pick.

I’m probably going to make a new PayPal to keep the league funds in and will post once league size is finalized. Don’t want a thousand bucks sitting around in my PayPal account which I usually use to pay off golf bets!
