hopefully the Fabbo/PQ pairing are doing well surviving at TPC Potomac right now. no one is playing while posting, so that's good, i think.

 

that reminds me of an event that symbolized yesterday's performance at blue mash.

 

i was live-grinting through the first 4 holes, happy to share scores for everyone to see...

The winning teams will receive awards and gift certificates. In the event of a tie for first place in either division, there will be a hole-by-hole play-off immediately upon the conclusion of play. Merchandise certificates will be awarded to the low scorers in all divisions.

You teed off at 8:50 AM 75 minutes from home. You just played 18 holes in a cold drizzle. You feel great about your day on the course. You have a wife, a kid, a shower, a chair and beer waiting for you at home. There are teams teeing off at 12:30 that might beat you, or might tie you.

 

Do you leave?

 

If so, do you go back?

 

For the record. . .by the time those last groups finished, I'm 3 beers in, sitting in my PJ's, going over the round in my head and probably watching highlights of pro's making putts on youTube.

So the new Tour season will end the weekend before Labor Day...since they are worried about football. And they made it a handicapped event with the staggered scores starting the event. Um, why not move it (like they have) and see how it goes from there?

 

And now the GGO Wyndham will be the last event prior to the 3-tournament playoffs. In NC during early August, where it's usually around 90* with 75-80% humidity. Great.......moar swass. At least they are doling out $10mil to the top 10 in the "regular season."

I'm getting worked up imagining the argument we'd have if we were teamed up and I wanted to leave.

Little small talk throughout. Pretty cordial atmosphere, I'd say.

 

I'm admittedly a complainer myself, but this guy was the classic good golfer complainer personality. If you've ever played with that person, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The world just has it out for the good golfer complainer. OMG, spike marks I can't fix. If only it was January I could fix these. OMG my ball is in the fringe next to it's ball mark and I can't fix the ball mark. Somebody on the tee box 60 yards away hit before I started my stroke on a 3 footer, and I yipped it, so I immediately must turn and look at that tee box. We're maybe 4 holes from finishing, and he says something like "I just need to hole something out, so I can get a skin and get out of here." Like it was a chore to not be in contention to win. Comment to partner at end up about needing to try to team up sometime next year, but not play crappy. Struck me as the kind of personality that would be pained by having to play with average golfers.

 

I don't want to oversell that stuff too much, though. He was totally tolerable, and chatty enough. For having probably an off day, totally fine to play with. He wasn't acting like an Word not allowedhat whatsoever. I didn't want to exchange phone numbers and become BFFs, but I didn't find playing with him problematic.

I left. And there was certainly no going back. I'm at work.

 

I mean relatively in the grand scheme of top level golf it is, but this wasn't the rinky dink fourball. Some portion of the best amateurs in the DC/MD/VA area are playing. Guys that have wins in MSGA events are playing. Guys that have played D1 college golf, and qualified for USGA championships are playing. Granted the field isn't all those guys. There were surely guys with similar, and worse handicaps than ours. There wasn't a thought in either of our minds for even a second that 67 would hold at the top. Not a word about "should we hang around?" We whizzed in their fancy locker room one more time, and got on the road thankful to be driving before traficmageddon hit. We did get the absolute best end of the weather, but even if it's constant rain, I'd expect some afternoon groups to continue to come in lower than 67.

for context: i played with one of the guys who was also on a team that shot 67 earlier this year. the week before I played with him he was playing in the USGA fourball down in florida. he said that before they left for florida his partner shot 62 on their home course. Moral of the story is that the guys FABB and PQ were up against are collectively a group of really good players.

 

What Fabb and PQ did is really impressive and Fabb is underselling it. Avenel is a HARD course and the conditions sucked. That 67 is REALLY good.
