Jacksonville FL course rankings?

Was down in Jax for the Players last week.  Only got to play twice due to the rain.  Heads up on North Hampton, the greens are absolute dog s***. More than half of them have mud/dirt as a portion of the green, apparently they got a fungus in the last year or two that ruined them.  Made a huge mistake deciding to play there instead of Amelia River.  Its a shame because the layout is really cool, some fun holes, but the greens were just horrid.

Any recent updates or recommendations / rankings for playable public tracks within an hour of JAX?  Wondering if it’s worth the ride to Amelia or not.

Eagle Harbor, Fleming Island and St Johns GCC both in great shape.  South Hampton is solid except the greens are a bit rough.

Anyone know much about deer wood country club. We are moving down there and looking to join a club.

just played that in a charity tournament.  great track.  would enjoy playing that as my home course a lot.  dont know much about the dues or fees.

plenty of private courses in the area.  Jacksonville CC is also another great spot.

Bert - thanks for the update on Stillwater. Seems like this place was in the "about to open" stage forever.

Glad you liked it. I had been waiting for some feedback.

Is Stillwater an easy course to walk (and I guess do they allow walking?)

Same for San Jose CC - walking culture at this club?

Thanks.

No idea if they allow walking or not yet. For the most part, absolutely walkable. I only recall a long stretch from 14 to 15 through pre-residential area. Loved the design of the course. Very minimal rough areas, nice open fairways and tough approaches into the greens. Wall-styled bunkers and like I said the greens were rolling pure. The practice facility is probably my favorite part of the course. Definitely give it a try, a nice option to indulge every once in a while if you get bored of the other CR210 courses

Never played this course but every time I drive by, it seems like it has a relatively small footprint. Plus it’s a very old and classic Country Club. I assume a very walkable course, between some trees, and minimal elevation with great conditions

Making a trip to Jax with 3 friends for Players weekend. Looking to play 4 to 6 rounds. Any updated suggestions on courses to play?

Agree with the comment below, K&B and S&S are great courses and fun to play. Slammer is in amazing condition right now, I drive by it everyday. Stillwater is also a great new track just one exit north of World Golf Village

Longpoint

Actually this is not Longpoint.  Longpoint is a great track on the island. The course you see is called The Dye Preserve at White Oak. It is a super exclusive Pete Dye Design.  There was a great article in Golf Digest a few months back about it.  It is owned by Mark Walters, one of the owners of the LA Dodgers.  It was technically the last Pete Dye design, although he passed before is was started. I have not played it, (probably less than 100 people have) but I did have the privilege of driving the whole course and it was spectacular.  They are also in the process of renovating the Legacy course, which is the 9 greens, 18 hole course out there.  It is set to reopen the end of this year/ early 24.

Interestingly enough, tge newly renovated St Johns golf club in Elkton, just south of St Augustine is surprisingly good after the renovation. Hole #2 isn't great, but the other 17 are. In good shape too.

I feel like Southampton has gone down a bit because it hasn't been in the best shape. Good track, but check Golfnow for latest reviews. I haven't been there in probably a month. It has been a traditional favorite of mine.

St Johns is always quick. The WGV courses are always in good shape, but they have gotten pricey. I live basically between those two and they are nice.

Have also heard good things about Stillwater but haven't played it yet.

Heading down in 2 weeks to the St Augustine/St John’s area Thu-Sun. Playing K&B and S&S on Friday. Looking at Stillwater and St John’s G&CC for 2 other rounds. We want to get 5 rounds in total. Any thoughts on that 5th round regarding a course recommendation? Trying to stay in that ~$100 round cost.

thanks.

My buddies and I played almost the same courses. If all else fails you could always play Stillwater twice. That was my favorite course.

south Hampton is always a fun track. Stillwater is a great course but if they are charging $140 a round it’s not worth it at all.
