new st190 driver review

Recommended Posts

I am taking out my new ST190 for its first warm weather round tomorrow...on spring break. I will report after regarding its forgiveness, distance etc. I usually use quite a bit of the face so I am very curious to see how long I can hit ball on toe, heel, high, low strikes. Also interested to see if I can keep the ball down with the KK70x shaft as I can tend to hit my driver a bit high.

One time, I had that Goldilocks of 2,100 spin but I told my fitter I generate a fair amount side spin because I come slightly over the top with the swing. I was all about the Tour Spec shaft in X until he gave me the Tensei White. He said it was heavier and I did mention a few years ago I was fit into a Ping’s 80 gram stiff tour shaft. Low and behold, the Tensei White was 80 grams. Immediately dropped my spin to 2,500. That is very likely the lowest I’ve ever seen my driver spin numbers. I MAY have to keep an out for a Tensei White Pro 70X down the road.

Yeah, it’s hard in your mid 30’s and been swinging upright all your life. Whenever I try to swing flatter, I just hit the other fairway way right. My AOA was at +1 though which surprised me as I figured it was negative.

This might sound ridiculous but I fought an OTT swing for a while, too.... I got my hands on an Orange Whip and I have to say, I really feel like that helped me swing more from the inside. I still fight it now and then but it might be worth a shot if you can get your hands on one.... I really believe that is a great tool for a variety of reasons.... swinging OTT with it feels really awkward.

For anyone wanting to adjust their swing weight (already shown in this thread with the driver), I made another thread showing the TaylorMade weights fitting in the ST190 fairway woods. They work perfect and are inexpensive if any shaft or length changes come in to play:

I added the 8gram weight from Billy Bobs, going to 42.5" with a Fuji Speeder TR 757S and its a perfect D3 as well. Thanks for taking the time Hammer!

Absolutely loving my ST190 9* with ATMOS Black TS 60X! Set on the lowest loft setting with 4 grams of lead tape on the sole. Best driver I’ve ever had and this is coming from a G400 LST with Synergy Black 60TX. Tough to argue with these results but have been thinking of grabbing the G version to see if I can bring the spin down a hair more.

Great stuff here. Numbers look ideal already, no G necessary!

Have the ST190 G with a whiteboard d+ at 45 and dropping bombs. 57 lie angle. Very easy to work with weights forward in toe and heel. Sound is second to none. Would be curious to see where swing weight is but no need to tinker based on 10 rounds I've used it.

I recently picked up the older ST180 fairly cheaply off eBay. I initially tried it at the 10.5 setting and was pretty much a trainwreck. Couldn't get any decent shot more than about 50% of the time and even the best ones were seriously low and short.

I was going to just give up and sell it on but decided to try the 11.5 setting. That's basically the loft I used on my previous M4 driver (think it's actually 11.25 or something) which is easily as long as any driver I've ever hit. But I wasn't optimistic, for me moving hosel settings one degree up or down on a driver usually makes a pretty subtle change.

Maybe it was the setting change or maybe my swing just adapted to the slightly heavier weight and firmer-feeling shaft but man it really woke up and performed. I still don't get the high flight and hang time I did out the M4 but I also don't get the two way miss (combination of high blocks and high OTT pulls) that the M4 gave me. With the ST180 my best shots are these medium-low 10-yard draws that run forever. And the bad swings tend to be low straight balls that are shorter but still in the short grass. Hardly ever get the block or pull that ends up outside the tree line.

I can't really judge spin but if I had to guess, this ST180 is spinning a lot less than most other 11.5 degree drivers. Not talking SLDR style low knuckleballs or anything but it's a hot-landing, long-running, wind-ignoring straight hitter for me. I think I give up about 5 yards of carry and gain about 15 yards of extra roll compared to the M4. Plus I hit about 75% of fairway versus 60% with the M4. I'm no expert but seems to me that's what you call a win-win situation.

I'm strongly considering pulling the trigger on this ST190 driver and 3 wood. I had a M4 that I hit great and sold like a idiot. I now have the M3 440 that I hit longer about 20% of the time. I love the look but the forgiveness just isn't there. I have been reluctant to change from taylormade because I have several taylormade shafts. I think it's time for a change though.

-Taylormade BRNR 11.5* set at 9.5* Ventus Red TR 7X playing 44.25”
