Sewailo is closing for overseed in a few days. Shame the pace was that horrendous. I played there last Sunday at 3pm with 2 of my friends and we barely finished 18 by sundown. That course has easily become my favorite in SoAZ.

I don't think there was anything going on out of the ordinary, just a ton of foursomes. One on every hole.

Saddlebrooke Ranch. Fantastic shape. Played in my clubs qualifier for the upcoming AGA 2 man scramble. Buddy and I shot -8 and that was with leaving a lot of makable birdies out there. But definitely worth the drive up there to play.

Oct 7th-29th. Unfortunately holes 1 and 10 are converted to temp 100 yard par 3s because the fairways got destroyed a few months back but they should be opened back up after overseed.

Fred Enke in best shape I've seen it in 2 years that I've been here.

Coming off overseed, greens are a little slow but smooth and true, should only improve over the next few weeks.

I managed to avoid the rough most of the round and figured out the greens speeds for 3 birdies on the back for a 75.

Randolph on Wednesday. Fun round with some random guys from Chicago.

Dry, firm and fast. Greens quick, but with a bit of crusty bumpiness.

Closing for overseed this Monday.

I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to, although there are several holes that have a decent distance between green and tee box. Best bet would be to call the course and see if they allow it.

As far as I know, Stone Canyon only has like 1 or 2 days a year where they allow public to play, and that’s some junior charity event. The Gallery is full on private as well as much as I know. You might want to check out Heritage Highlands (right next to Gallery and Dove Mountain), but honestly Sewailo, Ventana, Dove and Starr Pass are all top notch courses and won’t disappoint.

Yes walking is allowed. The thing is that they give at most a 5 dollar discount for walking as opposed to cart riding. Actually that is for the "shark experience" cart fee that they stopped charging anyway at the beginning of summer. The last two years I have walked the 18 holes that the pros used for match play during April and May but after that it was just too hot and the distance and elevation changes were too exhausting for me and was affecting my scores. If you are a young trooper maybe the Wild burro 9 would be walkable as well and you could walk any of the 9 hole combinations year round. You are a faithful poster here so I am sure you will report here how it went.

Anyone play Del Lago in the past 2-3 weeks?

What kind of shape is it in?

Might want to hit it Monday or Tuesday this week.

Just played Del Lago today. Good shape overall. Greens were a little shaggy in some spots but overall had a nice roll to them. Fairways nice and grassy.

Thanks Shipwreck. I'll need to book 4 tee times Feb 1-4. The first day is a tune up so we're looking for wide fairways. After that we're looking for the nicest courses we can play for less than $100. I played Arizona National years ago and enjoyed that. Otherwise here are the courses others have recommended.

Dove Mountain

La Paloma

Gallery

Saddlebrook Ranch

The Preserve

Starr Pass

Quarry Pines

Ventana

For first day easier courses I have

The 49er

Silverbell

I appreciate your thoughts on any of these.

For easy/easier, Del Urich and Randolph are fairly wide and nice. Del Lago is excellent as is Sewailo for the nice/tougher courses.

For a first day tune up, as Cheeser said, Del Urich or Randolph North are about as open as they come. Feb will be at the tail end of the season so you’re looking at around $50ish w/ a cart.

For your other 3 days, I’d definitely try and put Sewailo in there at least once. Conditions are always immaculate. Trying to stay under $100 you might be able to get away with Ventana or Starr Pass in the later part of the day, but I’d honestly check out Heritage Highlands. Quarry is a decent track but not anything that’s going to WOW you. La Paloma I believe is now private, as is Gallery. You could potentially get onto Dove for under the $100 mark too, but it’s hard to tell what courses are gonna charge anymore.

My wife and I were just in Tucson for the first week of November. We played five courses all in great shape. I can't tell you the green fees because it was a whole package and this was our first desert golf experience so my opinion is based on that. In order of my preference

Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course (great shape, challenging but not punishing, recently overseeded, long distance to get around)

Arizona National (great shape, challenging, not punishing, first desert experience)

Sewailo (great shape, challenging and hit lots of bunkers and surprising to see so much water!)

Ventana Canyon - Mountain Course (beautiful course, lightening fast greens, tough course, long distance to get around)

Dove Mountain (nice course, awful pace - 5.5 hours, no course marshals, almost no water on course like everywhere else)

I may be headed to a conference in Tucson for the first week of march. Its at the J W Marriott. Any suggestions on whether we should just play there or head out? Games will be rusty coming out of the northeast. Would be looking for a scenic course as opposed to a tough track. The better half likes good scenery. Advice appreciated!
