New to golf, what irons should I get?

I don't think someone who has gone golfing 10 times has a very repeatable swing and therefore fitting is somewhat pointless IMO. Ping G or cheap Taylormade RBZ/Rocketbladez/Speedblades with made for shafts will be just fine to get started.

I'll echo a set of used or new Ping S/GI irons.

I'm still rocking Ping Rapture irons that were a gift from my parents many years ago (10+). They're 12 year old irons, but they work great. Although my ball striking has improved incredibly, they still do everything I need them to do, and don't leave me asking for me. I just regrip them whenever the grips wear out.

Good luck on the club search, and welcome to the sport!

Have you got good hand-eye coordination or play any stick-ball/puck sports ? if you do go with a players CB iron. What do you want to get out of the game if you want to improve quicker but will cost you on the course at the start a players CB iron will give you feedback on misshits and will make you learn quicker, also can learn how to shape the ball. If you're looking for a more user friendly club have a go of a Srixon either z585 z565 for game improvement or players CB z785 z765

This is seriously bad advice on many levels. The OP has only played 10 times. It sounds like he is older. Golf is difficult for most people, especially those who learn later in life.

A good game improvement iron would make it easier for the OP to have some fun with the game. If it turns out that the OP has some hand/eye and serious club head speed, players cavity backs would be the next step.

MP 33's if the OP is a serious masochist.

Can’t go wrong with PING but there is allot of good stuff out there. I’d recommend something a little more gi than the 790’s.

Callaway Epic MAX 10.5*
Callaway Mavrik MAX 15*
Taylor Made M4 19* & 22* hybrids
PING G410 5-U w/DG 105s
Cleveland RTX 54* & 58*
Odyssey Stroke Lab Big Seven Toe Up vs MEZZ1 vs Seemore
Precision Pro Nx7 Pro, Garmin S60 (watch)

Well so here is my take on it as I started playing golf later in life. I started playing regularly (weekends) at 28 and so I started off with a cheap set and tried to build up. I started with a Walter Hagen big box art and I will say if you go too cheap you will just find yourself upgrading faster and spending more in the end. I would set a budget of around $400 and get a good set of irons. But before you buy I would post here your typical swing stats. You have played ten times so while it may not 100% repeatable it will allow us to give you better advice on irons and possible shafts! For example I played XROS irons with 80 gram stiff shafts that I thought were great for my swing (I mean they were stiff after all!), but I had some really inconsistent results. Went and got fitted at a demo day into project x 6.5 shafts which helped a lot with dispersion. So how far do you hit your 7 iron, driver when you play and do you take a divot etc? Just basic things like that can give you a lot of information about some used clubs to look for! This is a great community and just saying go buy used is great advice but honestly you can get even better advice on this site!
