2019 Overseeding in AZ?

Hello AZ golfers, looking at possible coming to Scottsdale in the middle of October this year. Was wondering what your recommendations/ advice would be on navigating the overseeding? As in, how long to wait before or after playing if a course is overseeding. I will google the 2019 schedule and see if I can find dates on it. Thanks in advance

Best to count from the start of the overseed, not the re-open date because some stay closed longer that others. As you can see, Estrella opens with just over two weeks of grow-in, Quintero, >three.

* Assuming a "typical" grow-in:

* 2-4 weeks: Don't bother

* 4-6 weeks: Marginal to OK playing conditions, still wet and slow and typically cart-path-only

* 6-8 weeks: Getting better, still wet and a bit slow but playable..

* 8+ weeks: Good conditions, green speeds about normal, still a bit wet.

 

For your visit Oct 27 to Nov 4, best to focus on courses with the longest grow-in, those that started in late Sept.

Azgolf.org usually publishes the overseed schedule in July/Aug.

Thanks for info. Looks like according to the 2018 schedule, October is a bad month to try and come play in the area.

The middle of October is the worst time of year to be here. It is not even worth it to bring your clubs. All the courses will have upped their rates. If they are open it will be cart path only, with soaking wet turf and thin but deep rough that your ball will disappear in vertically. Rounds take forever.

 

I refuse to play at all from overseer until mid November. Sorry mate.

Are there courses to the north that don't overseed or tracks in the area that skip a year every so often? Then there's Apache Stronghold, which I don't think overseeds. If there was ever a reason to spend a few days in Globe, AZ, this may be it. Golf 36, gamble, repeat...

The only courses that I know of that skip every few years are private, e.g., DF isn’t overseeding this year at all. It is much better for the grass to take a break every 5-6 years and revenue isn’t an issue.

 

The only thing I’d revise a bit from TJY is that courses that don’t overseed greens are more fun to play coming out of overseed more quickly at least. Fairway grass still needs at least 4-5 weeks though.

This is a good point... Overseed is a great time yo head up and play courses in Prescott, Sedona, Payson etc.

If over 100 afternoons are "still hot" then yes it is still hot. Mornings are starting to cool down then. You may get some days mid september with highs in the 90's, but a random 107ish is still a possibility. Overnight lows can still be in the 80's.
