First Bandon trip; shocked by the cost

It's easily enough done in high season. Cheapest golf (with caddy)/lodging option (with everyone having their own bathroom) get's you to $750/day before factoring in food, drinks, and transport to get there.

The tacky thing, is someone taking the high-roller version of a trip to Bandon, and then banging on about it and having a right whinge about how much they are going to spend.

Our window is Thanksgiving to April and it's the best option in North America during that period without a doubt, to the point we don't bother with anything else.

I dread the inevitable thread in August telling us how much better value golfing in Cabo and Florida is.

He’s kind of stating his facts to counterpoint someone else’s opinion. But carry on being the antagonist.

 

I should say that I think is point is Bandon can be VERY reasonable for a golf trip. I have been somewhere between 15-20 times, only 1 time have I stayed less than 2 nights and twice stayed more than 3. Over all those trips I have only spent over $1000 once, and some of those trips included caddies. But what do I know.

If you read my post, I was supporting the claim you can drop a $1000/day in peak season, you can, you absolutely can, I totally agree with that. Fill your boots and for the love of god hopefully actually enjoy it.

But whinging about how much something costs when you're maxing out all the options? Give us all a break.

Let's review the facts;

I was shocked at the price because being out in the middle of nowhere (cheap land, cheap labor) and so popular (sold out 12 months in advance) I expected it to be cheaper. Much cheaper. Is being shocked at a price a crime? Is it tacky?I do two or three golf trips per year. Bandon will be right up there with the highest cost trips and about 70% higher than a low end trips like Banff and 120% higher than Lake Tahoe.I got over my shock and will be there for a week in August. I have no doubt we will love this trip.I don't know what "whinging" means but it doesn't sound like a description of being shocked about a price.

To be fair, you can go to Bandon in peak season, play a round and have a room to yourself for cheaper than a round at Pebble.

I dont think the land was cheap or building the course was cheap, also, if something was so popular why would it be cheaper? does not make any sense. the fact that all courses are ranked in the top 15 says volumes which will drive the cost up, happens everywhere. we have arcadia bluffs and forest dunes as the top public tracks and those are becoming more expensive the popular they get. they've also expanded which is driving costs) But id like for you to come back with a report on your trip as im interested in how you feel after you get done and see where your opinion lies afterwards.

I always try to post a summary after my golf trips. And our entire group is uber excited about going to Bandon in August. I fully expect to have a wonderful golf trip.

I don't think a round at Pebble costs more than a room plus a round at Bandon. The cheapest Bandon rooms we could get are $372 plus $295 green fee and that totals $667. Pebble green fee is $575 beginning April 1.

 

But I get your point. LOL.

Peak season, 1 round of golf is $295, a Forest King room is $280, total $575. Pebble round of golf $550. Plus 7.25 tax = $590. Where is math wrong?

Pebble's rates go up to $575 before tax starting in April :-)

You fail to add tax to the BD rooms, which, BTY are not available. But, obviously, you have some innate need to be correct. So, I will help you with your insecurity. YOU ARE CORRECT.

it doesn’t matter to me if you think Bandon is over priced. Everyone has their opinions. The only thing I’d say about comparing to Pebble is that for Pebble, especially peak season, in order to get a guaranteed tee time you have to stay at their hotel for a minimum of 2 nights. Factor that in with a round of golf and you’re over $2k. You can always call the day of and try to get on, but odds are that you won’t get the tee time you want or on at all.

Enough already. Bandon is worth every penny. Of course its fairly pricey but hey you get 4 soon 5 world class courses out your front door in one of the best locations on the planet. I would say its extremely good value.

The fact those rooms are/were sold out is irrelevant. You said you could not play a round and stay a night for cheaper than a round at Pebble and I provided facts that show you are wrong. Also the room tax is less than the sales tax at Pebble because we don’t have a sales tax here.

 

it’s not about being right or wrong. I am just stating my belief that Bandon has not priced itself out of the market for your average golfer. Now Pebble is a poor example but just using that as a comparison. It Portland your average round for a poorly conditioned and designed muni is over $50 with average public tracks running +$100 for a round mid-summer. Now Tetherow will run you $190 peak season and Pronghorn will run you over $200. If people stop playing those courses for those prices then I will agree they have priced themselves out of the market but as long as people pay I can’t agree.
