Obsolete clubs that would still cut the mustard in 2019

My son is using my 845s oversize from 01-02? I used them in 2018 and shot several rounds in the low 80s which is no worse than I shoot these days. I still have the Warbird 3wood in the closet and it has a great sound and feel. I would still have the matching Warbird driver but my son hit one flush on the shaft and the head went flying off the top deck at top golf.

I still have a Ginty in my garage. Shaft is too whippy to use.

Also have my 855s from the mid-90s. Actually took the 6i to the range this weekend out of curiosity. Other than the length (2* weaker than my MP54), I could still game these clubs.

My father has an old Ping Eye2 5i that he won't get rid of. Love hitting that thing.

This thread makes me want to start a regular foursome or maybe a charity tournament where everyone has to game 20+ year old clubs...

But then again some Hoganistas want to tar and feather me and burn me at the stake for putting Apex shafts in non Hogan clubs------ LOL I kid I kid no one has said anything bad to me on here

I agree that vintage irons hold their own against any modern offerings. Looks and feel are important to me and on that score I would chose any of my vintage sets over today's sets. Hogan Precisions are about the best feeling irons I have played. 60 years of "progress" has done little to better them. "Performance" has largely come in stronger lofts. My Apex II cameo 4 iron has almost exactly the same loft and shaft length as the Callaway Epic Forged 7 iron. I am happy hitting the 4 iron!

Stu, may I ask a question?

My first set of Apex’s were White Cameos.

Second set was Redlines. (actually had PCs in between and original Edges both with Apex shafts)

And then the 1999’s.

 

so, here is my question of you, as an Apex shaft aficionado -

Is the a difference between the AMF (Cameo), Cosmo World (Redline) and the Spalding (1999) Apex shaft? I think the AMF and Cosmo shafts are the same, but think I heard (a long time ago) that Spalding’s Apexes were different.

 

Thank you in advance for any insight you can give me. I still have the Redlines and the ‘99s and I am just curious if the shafts have the same specifications.

Yep the Spalding Apexes were different and seem stiffer to me. The older Red Band Apex shafts AMF vintage is what I use. The Cosmo shafts I have not messed with but there are some Hogan Experts on here that can elaborate more. But the AMF shafts work very well in the Macgregors for me.

Thank you Stu. That’s probably why I prefer the Redlines, they have the same red band as the AMF Apexes.
