I'm aware of the design/engineering process which club companies use, , which includes reliance on machine testing, computer modeling etc...

However my belief is that computer generated designs do not give enough weight to the "human factor". Specifically, that squaring the club face at impact might be more consistently and easily achieved with a smaller club head.

For my own game I find it easier to consistently square the club face with a 425CC driver than I do a 460CC driver. And I find it easier to square at impact a relatively small iron head design, such as Ping S56, than I do a large head iron design like the G700.

For me the bigger heads provide distance and accuracy forgiveness from mishit shots, but I strike fewer mishit shots when swinging relatively small heads. So it seems like a trade-off that is do I want better results from mishit shots or do I want fewer mishit shots ?

For every driver head size I've tried shaft lengths ranging from 44" to about 46".Does this answer your question ?

My point about squaring a club at impact is mostly my belief that as head size increases, the head becomes more bulky and ask such perhaps more challenging (than a relatively small head) to square at impact. For example, everybody can agree that if there were an 800CC size driver head that would be too large. Or if there were an iron design with a head size three times larger than anything else on the market, that head would be too large for anyone to effectively swing and strike good shots.

So if we can agree that it may be counter productive if a head size gets too large, then the next question is which size is just right, not too small and not too large?

Could be a shaft issue.

I play the Ping Rapture from time to time with the stock shaft, which I think is a very good shaft. I also play mine at 43-3/4 or 44", can't remember. For what it is supposed to do, it does a very good job.

Had an F9 at 44" with a Tour AD IZ 7x and an R15 14* at 43" with a Diamana R80x. From my little range test today I was straighter with both 3w and mini.

Nice experiment. My latest tinker is a X100 @ 43 1/2" in a 10.5* 9015D. Mid/flat trajectory, good ball speed given the head, doesn't carry as far as my 917D3 w/ DJ6X, but hits the ground running. Had a 12* DCT, but sold it to a friend before I did anything with it. I have a few Rifle 7.0 steel wood shafts kicking around, but don't think I can load them anymore.

For all the guys yearning for a small headed driver, find an S Yard T.388.

388 cc Endo forged titanium head with chemically milled thin titanium crown and variable face thickness technology. Beautiful shape and size, matte black finish, and feels fantastic. Designed by Kenji Kobayashi.

Would be the perfect head for a 44” mini driver build. I just bought another one after not having one for 4-5 years and am going to put a high quality shaft in it and play it at 44.5” maybe 45”.

Hi Matt. I tried a 388 a few years ago and didn't get on with it, but that was probably the 45 1/2" length. Felt good though.

2nd range session and I think the Ping will be up for sale. It feels better but the more I go after a shot the more chance there is of the ball going left. The TM no where near as much. Helps with having the adjustastbility to open the face more. Both of these are no where near as bad as anything at 44"+ for me. Both are easier to square the club face compared to 400cc+ driver heads.

I have the original version of the RBZ Tour Spoon (as well as 2 backups) that are about 10-15 yds shorter than my driver but 2x's as accurate. The original version has a deeper face and is great off the tee.

Therefore, I do not carry a driver unless I am playing a >7000yds course which is not often.

I just nabbed a new in wrapper Maltby 350cc forged Ti 10.5° head off eBay. It's coming via USPS today. Gonna shaft it at 44" and give it a rip in my Sunday AM round. I've been trying another 460cc head recently and I'm all over the face. I'll try the same shot with my small head 3W and nut one right down the middle. Big headed clubs simply aren't for everyone.
