What do I put in the bag?

Hey guys, I'm new over here and just wanted to start out by saying hey!

 

I got back into golfing this year after a few years off and borrowed a set of clubs from a buddy, titleist ap1 to replace my ping i3 o sizes. I like them both, but recently have been thinking about giving the pings a go. At first, I switched soly for distance but towards the end of the season I was really finding my game again and realizing that maybe game improvement irons with high loft don't suit me well. ( I was always really good ball striker). I always liked the look and feel of blades and players irons. I can hit the titelists a mile until the longer irons which seem to taper off the exaggerated lofts and became more traditional. When i miss the ap1s tend to go right where my pings wind up short. You also obviously can't work the ball as easy with the ap1s....

 

So my question is ...is it stupid to go back to the pings because they are outdated?

What am I missing by switching and going back?

And yes I know that I should get fitted, but it's not in my budget right now based on our families concerns with my son's health.

Those Pings aren't that outdated...the lofts will be weaker than many of today's irons, but that is just a number on the bottom of the club. I know a few golfers who still play the Ping Eye 2's, which came out in 1986. If you hit the Pings better, and feel more comfortable with them, go back to them until your budget allows for a fitting. Nothing wrong with the i3's.

Welcome! I agree just play what is comfortable until it is in your budget to get fitted. I don't think you are missing out on much IMO besides companies making irons more forgiving for each type of iron category. Good luck and I hope your family situations gets resolved soon!

Return to golf with the Ping i3 O'sized. You know the clubs, and it will be a good way to get the swing muscles back into shape.

AT the upcoming spring golf expos and demo days, go out and hit different models of irons. When you find irons that you strongly prefer your i3 O's, get fitted.

The Pings are timeless. If you like them, stick with them

had some ping i3 for a while and they are essentially indestructible. If you hit them consistently and have the right gaps at the top and bottom of your bag then stick with them
