What is the weight of iron head?
Typical head weights for irons:

3i: 240g
4i: 247g
5i: 254g
6i: 261g
7i: 268g
8i: 275g
9i: 282g
PW: 289g

The 7g progression between heads is fairly standard.
Ditto!

Of course you have to consider the manufacturing tolerances (+/- 2g) that most companies allow but I've seen them off by as much 3-4g usually on the light side.
I worked out a physics problem on here in the "golf myths" thread about a month ago and asked what the average 6 iron head weight was and got 260-270 grams as a response. I know you are asking about specific clubs, but hopefully this is a start. What are you planning on using this for?
I weighed my iron set (Ping I-5) including True temper stiff shaft (128 g), ping white grip (50 g), grip tape and epoxy...
P : 442.4 g
9 : 434.2
8 : 429
7 : 422.3
6 : 417.6
5 : 409.8
4 : 407.2
3 : 402.6

I was confused the inconsistency of the weight of iron set. What I want to know is what make different weight of each iron. Anyway, I got answer now !!! Thanks WRX guys..

Is there any explanation as to why the longer irons have less weight? Is this just due to less material? Is it to compensate for a longer/heavier shaft?

I've always felt like I might strike my longer irons more consistently if they were weighted more like my 9i or PW... Not feeling the weight at the end of the shaft as well causes me to muscle up and make faulty swings.

Curious if anyone can help explain this.

I always looked at it to compensate for the longer shafts. Not sure wether this is right or wrong.

The 'standard' weight progressions are designed around maintaining a const SW as the playing lengths vary (by the 'standard' 1/2" length increments). Const SW matching is just one approach there are other philosophies - such as MOI matching. But increasing SW as the lengths get longer is not common at all. If you are having problems that is solved by increasing the head weights of the longer irons, then it's likely an indication that the SW is too light on in the whole set or shaft weight is not a good fit (and you are just better able to compensate in the shorter irons).

sorry to bring back such an old thread.  I am building a 29* Hybrid head that weighs 248g.  Should I tip it like a 7i or more like a 4i given the head weight?

What length and swing weight do you want to play it at?

It's the final head weight to get the playing specs you want that matter, not the raw head weight.

Stock length was 38.75” which is what I built it to. I ended up tipping it an inch which is what they recommended for a 4h. Seems to play true to flex (R flex Recoil 64g). Came out to D0.

I started building clubs using static swing weights for years.

In the late 90’s, early 2000’s I started playing with the idea of dynamic or progressive swing weighting.

Since then, that’s how I weigh my personal sticks.

Works fine for me.

I increase swing weight in every 2 clubs.

When done, they might look something like this.

4-D-2

5-D-2

6-D-2.5

7-D-2.5

8-D-3

9-D-3

PW-D-3.5

GW-D-3.5-4.0

SW-D-4.0-5.0

LW-D-4.0-5.0

If course you can adjust any way you wish.

Please feel free to chime in and share your thoughts and ideas on this.

Though I’ve been building clubs since the mid 1980s, I’m never too old to learn something new.

non-const swing weight progressions are not uncommon at all.   I use one myself  (1/2 swing weight pt per 1/2" length).   But in almost every case (i'm aware of at least), the progression will have the swing weights getting lighter as the clubs get longer - such as with your case.   My previous comment was specific to the case of the swing weights getting heavier as the clubs get longer in length.  But it was just a warning of a potential problem.  As with anything else to do with fitting, there are no hard and fast rules - so anything is possible when it comes what might work best for any individual.

Dear Lord, my heads are light. I pulled the shafts out of my irons to soft step them once. Whenever I build a set of irons I always weigh the heads, and my 6i head is 250g. According to Golfworks, it’s supposed to be 255g. No wonder there were 4g tip weights in each iron.

Interesting.  I am not convinced what you got is correct.

My 620 MB 4i head is 245g and 6i is 258g.  Haven't had the new T100 heads weight yet.

The "standard" I learned was 261 gm for a 37.5" 6i  +/- 3-4 gm for typical manufacturing tolerances.  The same as posted above by @Golfdog

But we also know OEM's don't mind ignoring standards to meet their own needs - so that's not really saying anything about what you can expect for any particular set.
