What was your first set of sticks?

Not counting my Hornung junior set, First set was my Dad's hand me down Gary Player International Irons by Professional Golf (The forerunner of ProGroup I believe) with Ben Hogan Laminated Speed Slot woods and a Bulls Eye putter. These irons had the weight up high like the old Tommy Armour's. Thus my propensity to hit any modern blade too darn high. I wish they made a new muscleback with a hunk of weight nice and high. :-)

My first full set was a used set of Hogan Radials bought in 1984. I still have them and reshafted them last year for my eight-year old and he's hitting them great. I've hit a few Pings since then, but am actually back to my second set of Radials, bought in 1989. They just feel comfortable, though they're a bit tired after all these years. I just picked up another set of New-Old-Stock Radials and am planning on building a mixed set with my Apex blades, probably carrying the Radials 2-6 and the blades after that. Not yet sure where I'll break the set though.

Anyone else keep going back to one of their early iron sets?

First set was a set of Lynx Predator Irons I bid $15 bucks for a silent auction. Think it was 1984.
Almost fell of the couch laughing once i saw these things again. Seriously have not seen or thought of them in 20+ years.

1984 ish? Pinnacle's with early cavity backs that had a dumbbell looking weighint system on the back. Very foggy. I know it was a set of Powerbilt's after that. Sweet bright orange bag that went with it. Fuzzy was the man! I remember hearing the rumor that those wood heads used a different type of oil on them that made them "harder".

My brother and I shared a set of Spalding Match Play. Driver, 3W 3,5,7,9, Putter. God-Awful green Wilson bag that cut into your shoulder. GIven a Michelob Light PW and Macgregor Great Scot SW with a Silouette Grip. Played with Blue Ridge Golf balls (Orange) purchased at Miles Lumber $10 a dozen. First (and last)membership was at teh local town park for $20 all you can play. There was a sign that said "If it weren't worth a buck, then don't come back" next to the first tee.

first post... I was around 9... My grandfather retired and bought the new Ping Eye 2s (pat pend) and gave me his Walter Hagen Trophys 2-9 with matching 1,2,3 wood and putter... steel shafts painted brown... always embarassed to play with them... now appreciate them... 20 years later, I got the Pings... still and will always keep them...

Speaking of Slotline; does anyone remember that mid 80s putter they did? Black, with big gold inserts in the heel and toe bumpers. Sort of a 'son of MacGregor Response ZT and a Ping Anser.'

And the irons they did? Again, a bit of a black and gold colour scheme... sort of a high-tech, glitzy Ping Eye...

What happened to Slotline?

I used to have a Slotline that was an "Anser" style putter except for the plumbers neck went in the opposite direction!!. I think it was called The Slotline "Onset".

John Daly starter set from Walmart - driver, 3-wood, 3/4 hybrid, 5-PW and putter, in a stand bag for $150 rolleyes.gif

I think I replaced everything with new equipment within 4-5 months starting with the putter, then the driver after the head flew off.

The first set of clubs I learned on was a hodgepodge of thrown-together mismatched clubs that were donated to The First Tee program at my muni. As i recall, I had a big bertha driver with a cut-down shaft, a big bertha clone 5 wood, a callaway x-14 5 iron, TM 320 6 iron, TM burner lcg 7 iron, ping i3 8 iron, some 9 iron I can't remember, a cleveland 588 RTG 60* lob wedge I still game today, a beat-to-hell cleveland 485 56* sand wedge, and a hillerich and bradsby blade putter with a faux wood sheath over the shaft. Those were the days...

Once I got better, I asked my mom to get me a real set of clubs from a used club shop. They had this set of becu Powerbilt TPS irons, clearly modeled after the Ping Eye2 for $75. I had never seen becu clubs, so I wanted to try them. I loved the way they felt, and convinced my mom to buy them. It felt so good to be able to get consistent results from iron to iron. I still have them sitting in my basement. I also got a TM 200 steel with a proforce 65 for a song, and a steel-shafted ping tisi 5 wood for free from my pro. That was my bag for at least a year or two.

In 1983 my high school friend and I bought a set of used Wilson Signature laminated woods and Irons. He took the driver, 3 wood, 3, 5, 7 and 9 iron. I took 2 wood, 4 wood, 4, 6, 8 and PW with a HnB stubby blade putter. That set costs us $70.00 in total with 2 bags and putters. I then saved my paper route money and bought a used set of Wilson GE with the illegal grip for $200 that I had to make payments on...

A mismatched set of blades, Arnold Palmer something-or-others with a Ram + 1 8 iron and Burke laminated woods 1,2,3,4 with the old TT Rocket shafts. Broke 100 with those and started looking for some real sticks.lol, Got a Ben Hogan 43" "speed slot" three wood and a 44" Tom Watson by Ram persimmon D-5 driver with the "high tech" carbon fiber insert. lol Used to drool over all the new cavity backs, then I bought my first set of matched clubs in '87 Powerbilt "Fuzzy Zoellers" at K-mart, $225 bucks. Cracked the hosel on the three wood after three weeks. lol Amazingly enough, my average score stayed around 90 even with the new cavity backs. lol
