@pete52

This isn't perfect, but you can get an idea of where you should/could be with a basic linear relationship. You need to know a bit about your club lengths though, and by length I mean measured length as USGA would require a driver measured. Here is an example.
If your 7i is a pretty standard 37" long from butt end of grip to heel of blade, and your driver is 45" measuring in the same way, then......
78/37 = X/45, X = 94.86 mph, or about 95 mph. In general, I find that about 15-20 mph more is what you can expect your driver swing to be if you are just as efficient with your swing as you are with 7i, the driver isn't too heavy for you, and you aren't afraid to swing a longer club with the same effort.

Swing hard in case you hit it!

I am about 90 with a seven iron and 118-120 with driver. I would expect with your seven iron speed about 100 with driver.

scenario with question.....

I recently went to a fitter at my club asking about installing s300 shafts in my current gamers. He said come take a few swings with my 7i before doing this. 10 index and playing old 1991 tour action blades with R400 shafts. (I am playing these because my clubs were stolen and these were a quick and cheap replacement for 50 bucks). According to the trackman I had a SS of 91 mph at the top end and 88mph at the bottom end. Carry yardage was 168 avg over 20 swings. My SS seemed high to me. I don't feel I swing hard at all which is confusing how my SS could be 90+ but this trackman is brand new as of 2020. I was hitting in pristine weather. 25C 70% humidex and no wind.

So I was told not to add the shafts and instead get new used clubs with stiff shafts. I really like these clubs because they are tough to hit and give instant feedback. Not as long as new that's for sure.. The fitter gave me a P750 7i with a DG 105 stiff shaft to try and my carry yardage was 8 yds further on avg over 20 swings (176 yds vs 168 yds)

My question is that with a 7i SS averaging around 90 mph and playing R400 shafts, is it smart for me to continuing using them if I hit them well or should I install these s300 shafts and risk it? I am not looking to rid these iron heads , even though I'm sure my index would drop if I bought a newer used set of cb's instead of mb's.

I also wondered about a driver SS. The thread has a post saying it's roughly 2mph/club or 12-15mph SS between a 7i and driver - depending on efficiency. So my driver SS would be approximately 102-105mph?. Another comment said he has a 90mph 7i with a 118-120mph driver SS. I assume I'm in between. I hit my friends TS3 with an x stiff hzrdus smoke shaft 285 carry avg over 10 swings which is much further than my current gamer. My gamer again is an older R9 supertri with a stiff proforce V2 shaft 45.5" length.

My understanding is that I'm hitting clubs nowhere near what I should be hitting... Any "cheap" advice is greatly appreciated!

Something to point out too on the 7i-driver conversion is whether your maxing out youre 7 or that's your controlled swing, ditto with driver.

I wouldn't worry about distance because those old blades are at least one club weaker in lofts than modern irons. For example your 9 iron is probably in the 44 degree range while a modern 9 iron is around 40 degrees which is basically your 8 iron. The most important thing is being able to hit your distance numbers consistently. As for trying out a stiff shaft I suggest you buy a single shaft that you are interested in ($30 ish) and do the work to swap it out yourself. If you like it then carry on and do the whole set and if you don't you can always swap it back.

90mph swing speed with a 7iron is pretty normal for an athletic guy with a good move but I wouldn't get caught up in expecting 2mph per club up to your driver. Most guys swing their irons with a lot less effort than they do driver so it's not uncommon for driver SS to be much faster than expected. If you are actually carrying that Titleist driver in the 285yd range then your SS is in the 115-120 range. Modern drivers are a significant upgrade over your R9 and it would be worth getting fit for one.

All great advice thanks. Forgot that my clubs are weaker lofts too. The TS3 I was hitting played at 46.5" and was an x stiff. Never guessed I would gain so much carry. Think the last time I had checked my driver SS I was around 112mph. 285 carry has never been close to my wheelhouse... maybe total yds. Is it still smart for me to stay with a stiff driver shaft? I don't normally swing full out and I feel if I purchased an x stiff shaft I may tend to not load it all the time. Getting away from the 7i thread - sorry.
