Square the face with forearms only - feel

Recommended Posts

I was getting  a bit of out sync with my driver recently, and felt like I was constantly trying to save my shots.

Usually my wrists  start assisting to square as the downswing begins.

But now I feel like I just keep the wrists in the same position (or basically keep them quiet).

This forces my forearms to go into action, and rotate, but while trying to keep the wrists in the same position as the forearms rotate (this is just a feel, obviously the wrists will have to rotate if the forearms rotate).

I was surprised as the shots were pretty solid.  It seemed like the face was more stable thru the hit.

Anybody have any input or do this exact thing in your swing?

I would feel like a real horses *ss if this is a key move I have been missing for years.

Im a chronic hold offer and its a struggle for me. Forearm release feel works better for me, when i try to focus with my hands, i either pull the crap out of it or wipe it.

For me the main force/torque comes for rotation of the forearm starting from the rotator cuff. If the swing arc is defined to be from the lead shoulder to the club head; the longer axle allows to release gradually from the top while a keeping the swing arc as wide as possible.

Interesting..  There really is no way to move the forearm independent of the wrists, but for some reason if I think of turning the forearms instead of the wrist,

In my normal swing, I think I am rotating form the "elbow" down, instead of from the shoulder socket.

But recently when focusing on the left arm mainly, I was rotating from the shoulder socket not the elbow.

So maybe that's the subtle difference that I couldn't pin point until I read your message.

I occasionally swipe across it with my driver (ie. not much compression) and by focusing on the "full" left arm rotation it seemed like I was getting better compression.

But I guess probably losing some speed, not sure.

So maybe I am giving up speed to get better compression?

Be able to disassociate the elbow and shoulder is important.  Through the release the shoulder support and the elbows provide the supination (both arms supinate thru release with the trail forearm pronating at pretty much impact and beyond).   It is the lead forearm supination (enabled by the unhinging/ulnar movement of the lead wrist) that provides clubface closure - Tyler Ferrell has video and measurements on this is several video - elite swing supination earlier and longer and more thab amateur swings (yes everyone supinate in the swing).   Very little clubface rotation is due to body rotation - amg has a video on this too.

Issues arise when either shoulder plays a more active role - typically their involvements accompanies a body stall, early arm extension, etc.    the classic late release flip movement from the arms trailing the pivot too much or it could just be the person recruiting them as a power source.

This
golfsmartacademy  free swinging supination, low grip pressure, swinging at the forearm instead of the shoulder. Many students need better supination patterns in their release

Forgot about this video but was posted in the NTC thread.    Great explanation of how forearms work versus using shoulders.

You really want to dig into this more, listen to this.   DeChambeau has a bit of a Spieth like followthrough because he's purposely trying to keep that left arm interally rotated so it's impossible to go left.  Gets into it around 4:00.

This is excellent. Mike Emery wrote about this in his book about 5 years ago. Max range of motion for repeatability day to day.

Exactly, or "locks" as Como calls them, which seems sort of weird when talking about the body but does make perfect sense.   It's also why Spieth's swing might have looked "ugly" before but was also very effective.
