Hive putters = Lose money

Don't get me wrong.

 

I only play with Bettinardi putters. But compared to Scotty Circle T (or other rare ones), Bettinardi Hive putters seem to depreciated in value unlike Scotty.

 

Why is that?

It's not just Bettinardi it's all brands, the price of a putter will drop, by how much it depends. Bettinardi makes some really nice Hive putters and some really ugly wall hangers too but if you really want one I'd just look on eBay or the BST to save a few bucks. That way if you don't like it you can break even or just lose a few bucks.

I second what Matt said. I usually view my putter purchase as sunk cost. Once the money is spent, I need to be okay with not getting anything back.

This is a good question.  I think you would be ok with the Mokume putters as an investment since they are made with precious metals (as to the exact amount, who knows) but in general you are probably right, UNLESS it is a particularly cool/unique one...the recent Miller lite gold/navy mallet and pez blade comes to mind.

 

That being said, if you are looking for a particular head model and hosel combination you may only be able to find it in the Hive.... being particular about my equipment and as someone who also games bettinardi putters exclusively (just won my club championship with the Queen Bee #9!) I could see merit in splashing for one 🤷

What I like about Bettinardi is that they give the more average consumer an opportunity purchase beautiful limited putters with their Studio B reserve releases - where they make a batch of like 200 Hive putters that they sell for around $600-800 depending on the model.

This might devalue some of their extremely expensive 1/1 Hive models, but I think it’s a good trade off in allowing more people get their hands on cool putters who are also probably more likely to use it versus flipping for a profit. I know SC does similar releases, like this year’s monoblok + jet set, but Betti’s are generally more intriguing and don’t feel as recycled despite having considerably more releases.

 

But if you buy a highly sought-after model, like a dass bb0, it should still resell relatively well. Still not as well as a SC GSS/009 though. That’s just what happens when you get to market first, and Tiger. But SC is still clearly a skilled businessman and manufacturer, although i’m not a huge fan of his branding/marketing tactics  (not including his massive prevalence on tour obviously)
