Do You Delete Bad Strikes?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a FlightScope Mevo, my first ever personal launch monitor.  I used it for the first time last night and love it.  As I was reviewing the data this morning, I see that it averages all of the data at the bottom of the session, which is great information to have.  That said, a couple of my shots I wasn't focused enough and just chunked the crap out of it.  One driver in particular I hit the ground behind the ball and then caught the ball on the way up.  Naturally the data for that swing is a large outlier in all fields (distance, spin, launch angle, etc.).

So, my question is, do you recommend deleting the bad strikes from the log?  Not just off-center strikes, rather, stuff like shanks, extreme chunks, etc.?

Thanks for the advice.

Yes.  I think one of the best parts of tracking data on a simulator (my local range has Top Tracer) is having average carry distances, as opposed to thinking your carry distance is that one time you absolutely flushed one 8 yards farther than any other swing you made.  You want that average to be made from realistic mishits, and not brought down by that 1 out of 20 shot that you top 🤣

I have a Rapsodo MLM and I absolutely delete the chunks and shanks etc.  Bit definitely keep the misses such as toe and heel etc.

Crap a Necro Post.....

UGH!

My useless $0.02.

it depends. most of the time I dont,  but for certain gapping session I do.

Generally Stats

1) I mostly dont as I do want to track somewhat the frequency/averages of missed shots out a bunch. Meaning if I have lets say 1 bad shots out of 10 shots, that means I have a 10% chance of a bad shot showing up. I need to take that into account when course managing shots.  This helps to be more critical of pin placement and danger when attacking pins and hitting shots or even off the tee layups.

2) I have to accept that I have bad shots, I cant pretend they dont exist. I also what to know if there is any type of consistency of bad shots. is it a chunk or a thing, slice or a hook.  This can also improve my confidence when play certain courses and shots in general.  pretending bad shots down exist has been a detriment to my course management.  A scratch player had managed my game for 1 round.... was pretty darn eye opening, as he knew my miss and made me play so shots I would have NEVER took.  But this really helped keep my game in check and reduced blow up holes.

Gapping Sessions.

1) I generally do delete really bad shots,  as the intent is to find the average distance of a certain club.  As an example I hit my PW 125y. Say I just completely lose a shot,  and it goes 100y.  This would reduce the average by a decent amount. giving me a skewed PW distance average.

2) I generally would say a 5% difference in distance average would be a +/- of average.  meaning if again 125y is my average, if I have a shot less than 118y (-5%) than it was a bad shot.  The other way also implies an issue of strike, If I hit it 131y (+5%),  with optimal ball flight conditions, this implies that maybe I am not 125y but I am not hitting the ball consistently and that my optimal flight conditions still have room for improvement.

So Missed shots can be valuable but all on how you use it.

GL OP!

Yes, but it depends what the goal is.

If I'm comparing clubs, shafts, settings, etc. I feel you need to leave bad strikes in to an extent.  say I'm comparing driver shafts, and I make a terrible swing and barely make contact with the ball sending it 160mph directly into the ground, then I delete it.  If instead I make a reasonable swing by my tempo is off and results in a big pull or slice, or whatever, then I'll leave it.  The point of that session is to find what's the most consistent option.  You can't delete shots out on a course.

If however, my goal is a gapping session to dial in my distances on well-struck shots, I'm deleting most outliers.   I want to know exactly how far specific clubs go when I put a good swing on them, then using that data I can work on my consistency after.   It does you no good to say "My average 5i is 175", when in reality half of them are 200 and half are crap contact that go 150.  I want to know that a typical well-struck 5i will go 200, and I need to work on cleaning up the mishits.  I don't have a set rule for what I will or won't delete, it's very fluid.  For example, my typical 7i will go about 185, I can blade it with 14* launch and go 185, or I can pure it at about 18* and get 185.  Obviously the bladed stroke isn't a good strike, even if the desired distance is achieved, so I'll delete it.

If I'm just doing a practice session with the only goal being to improve my swing, I leave all shots in.  I like to be able to go back and view the session stats, and can correlate some great shots with specific launch conditions, and the same for crappy hits.
