Thanks so much for your help im going to take a few swing with the 1 iron just for kicks then figure out a way to display them in the man cave

Take them out for a 9-hole twilight round, you might be surprised how well they play.  The soles on the irons like very playable to me.

When my son's golf coach passed, his wife gave him his old Stan Thompson wood putter. Appears to be of a newer vintage, no markings except what you see. Lots of good memories!

I recently picked up an old set of Stan Thompson's. Irons and woods. The woods are 1-4 and the irons are 1-10. Shafts are

R flex Stan Thompson  pro only I have pictures but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to insert them

Hey I figured it out! Yea me!  The reason for the post is I'm trying to figure out how old these are. There is a serial number on the soles of the woods is there any information to be gleaned from the serial number?

Are the holes on the soles of the irons for adding weight? Do they have screws in them already?

Great looking irons and woods. As @deejaid said, those irons look very playable.

Very cool clubs.   I don’t think the serial numbers will do much good.   Pics of the shaft bands would help a bit in dating them.  The woods are definitely 1960’s or later due to the laminate construction.   All the 1950’s era Stan Thompson woods I’ve seen have been persimmon.

As for the irons, hard to tell.  Again, shaft band pics will help.  I’d guess 1960’s to early 70’s.   They look fantastic.   I’ve yet to find a set as most I’ve found have been a bit beat up.    They look to be in very good condition.

Earlier than later I believe on the irons; by the 70's Thompson used "Pitching Wedge" (and Sand Wedge for SW)  in a cursive script instead of 10 iron.

The weight port in the sole of the iron was misguided to me... it wears away quickly.

As an aside, how're you doing deejaid? I haven't been in the US/California for over a year now!

Along those lines, I say 60’s instead of 50’s as Stan Thompson irons of the 1950’s had the Kenneth Smith nomenclature with a 99 wedge.

And I am hanging in there James.   Been a long year for sure.   When you’re back in California let’s play another classic round.

Here's a shot of my Ginty which I refinished myself back in the mid 90s. I had to use a bit of electrical tape in order to keep the whipping from unraveling, but other than that I still game this club. Still the best club around for getting out of the rough IMO. If I was playing in the US Open the Ginty would definitely be in my bag! It's one of the three woods I keep in my vintage bag.

Adding to deejaid's pics. I found a second set of Thompsons during some thrift store shopping yesterday.

The first set were blondes I picked up early in the year. They are more egg-shaped and less round than yesterdays set, more like a classic 40s shape.

Yesterday's set are really nice. They are rounder, have deeper faces, and are larger over all than the first set. Plus, the dark stain looks better to my eyes than the blonds. I'm amused by the 2 1/2, 3 1/3, 4 1/2 woods and I'm curious how they will work out. These set up really nicely and I full expect them to be great players.

Louisville Golf had parts & assembled some Gintys a few years ago.  They had a letter from Callaway Golf that they would allow them to make the Ginty until all of the parts were gone.  I checked their web site recently & they no longer offer the Ginty (7 wood trouble club).  Callaway golf claims that the own the Ginty rights, but they do not seem to do anything with it except to shut down any resurgence of this great trouble club.

That is a shame because a modern day Ginty type club would sell like crazy and probably be pretty amazing.  Our course has horrible rough and I started putting an old Ginty in my REGULAR bag and my friends laugh at me until I extricate myself from some gnarly stuff with it...then they just shake their heads.

About 10 years ago Taylormade brought out a modern version of their Raylor rescue club.  It had the distinctive keel sole that you see in a Ginty.  It was available for a couple of model years and then discontinued.  I never had the opportunity to hit one, but considering how playable the regular version of their rescue clubs were, I'm not surprised that the Raylor didn't really catch on any better than it had.

My Ginty is a regular fixture in my vintage setups, but it's not something I pull to hit from the tee or from a good fairway lie where I don't need the extra help digging the ball out of a tough lie.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I swear I think I could  hit that Ginty off of a cart path.  I have hit it off of some TIGHT fairway and hard pan lies very successfully.

I'm a picker/sweeper so I find that the Ginty is a bit tricky to hit well off of a tight lie.  Conversely, the club is magic out of a divot or thick rough where the sole weight can really help me plow through.

I also had a 4W Ginty and didn't get along with that at all.  Not sure why, but I find a traditionally soled fairway easier to hit.

I love my Ginty. about 35 years ago I played a rental set that had  1, 3, and 5 Ginty woods. I hit them so well (probably a fluke, considering my abilities at the time) that I bought them. I ended up just using the 5 (which is probably a 7 by today's standards). I liked it so much that I later bought a 4, and also a metal head 4.

In the 90s the 5 broke, the insert shattered and the sole plate came off. I reattached the sole plate with epoxy and added a 2nd screw. and poured a new insert with a compound I got from ( the late lamented) Golfsmith. It came out well, and I've been using it ever since. My wooden 4 eventually shattered and was not repairable. I gave away the others during a down-sizing binge, but I still love my Ginty 5.

I’m into the Beverly Hills era stuff but have always wanted one of these.  I believe they were called the “Californian Ginty” if I recall.

Hi, I just acquired a Stan Thompson California Ginty, unused.  Rainbow persimmon fairway wood.  Any idea of the value? Thanks

Interesting....I have a set of Ginty irons - 3,5,7,&9 which have the same shape as the Ginty wood. I also have the Ginty wood and a set of Ginty woods - 1,3,4,8,&9...with a Ginty-style wood, no logo or any lettering. As soon as I remember where I put my camera, will edit  & post pics

Sorry to sully this thoroughbred thread with an imposter but does anyone know anything about this Lynx Chisler - beyond it being a blatant copy of a Ginty?20230305_140458.jpg.2ea2462c6aac056aace85674fd358295.jpg20230305_140626.jpg.0a20513225ed2ea91faaeaafe7540051.jpg20230305_140539.jpg.360a4b76279f8912ae3912857f4d8a8e.jpg

I Googled "Chisler", not a term i am familiar with, and it seems to  be slang for a cheat so I assume the name suggests it is a cheating stick?!

Will give it a try against the magician's wand that is the Ginty to see if there is any truth in the name or whether a Chisler is a type of garden spade!

interesting...hmmm - "chisel" also refers to a tool for chipping, carving, or gouging in metal, wood or stone....so perhaps, "Chisler" (a deliberate misspelling?) might refer to chipping out of rough or divot?
I also have a Louisville Golf "Niblick", a modification of the "Ginty" in that the peak of the sole is grooved compared to the "Ginty".

I like your thinking! Gouging is certainly what it is designed to do so that sounds more plausible!

Would you know the relative club number of a Stan Thompson “ginty” fairway wood if no number assigned to sole of club? Guessing a 5 or 7 wood?

I have these 2. Only one is stamped 9 and 34 degrees. The other has nothing on it and has to be a 7 I think. I threw a H&B 5 wood in for loft progression picture

My Stan Thompson collection has grown somewhat from these humble beginnings. 20240320_181053.jpg.7f6e432854bec255c68df341af9ab689.jpg20240319_181655.jpg.bb364b9706ab5915d3a69f76d888b41a.jpg20240319_181812.jpg.87f39f66c3ade191a446f5d01bd00953.jpg

Nothing to compare with @deejaid. Would love to find some early Stan Thompson's like @deejaid. On the UK side of the pond pickings are largely limited to the Ginty's.

Beautiful collection, Foozle!  You definitely have me beat on Ginty’s!

If anyone is interested in a 7(I think) & 9 with stiff Apollo shafts pm me. I got these at a thrift store and they just sit. Shipping + couple bucks. Appear to have been made for a giant. 7 is 43 inches and 9 is 41.5. They are neat clubs to me but maybe someone else would really enjoy them.
