What's with all of the 5 Woods??

Yes.. I had a hybrid, briefly, and really did not give it a fair shake.. I'll do some experimenting this weekend..

I would think that some of your buddies have 5 woods and hybrids in their bags... ask them to let you hit a few and see for yourself. Failing that and IMO your best option... just wait for a vendor day at your local course, they will be happy to fit you and see what best works for you. This way you can hit off of real grass, see the true ball flight, have access to Trackman/GC Quad numbers,  and get the benefit of the fitter's opinion. Who knows, you may end up changing the entire top end of your bag. 😆

I guess you can say I love 5 woods so much that I now carry 2 of them in the bag (and haven't gamed a 3 wood in over a decade).  first is a Mavrik sub zero 18 deg with AD DI which is a 225-230 carry club.  the second which I just added this week is a SIM2 titanium set to 21 deg with Ventus Blue Velocore which is a 215 carry club.  both are built to same 42.5" stock 5 wood length for consistency and also because the 7 wood shaft length was too short for comfort.  for those that are curious, next club down is a TS3 23 deg hybrid set to 24 deg with Atmos Red Tour Spec for your standard 200 carry.

Well 3 & 5 woods answer fundamentally different questions for shorter and longer hitters, don’t they? For someone that rarely or never encounters a hole where the green can’t, in theory, be reached in two, a 3 wood is for tee shots where driver is too much, and for the very longest of par 5s.  The five wood is probably more for long shots out of the rough and approach shots where the 3/4 iron isn’t quite enough, or very very long par 3s.

For a shorter hitter, often times the three wood is for advancing the ball as far down the fairway on par fives as they can, and they probably aren’t needing to worry about trouble short of the green. 5 wood fills a gap that’s probably a common shot, even on longer par 3s.

In my experience, short hitters will hit 5 and even 7 woods further than a 3 wood off the deck. They just don't have the club head speed to get any decent carry out of a 3 wood.

struggle with my 3 wood currently so thinking of making the switch. 5 wood seems like a much more playable option vs 3 wood in general

I have been playing 1,3,5, wood and was playing a 7 wood or 3 hybrid but recently went to a 9 wood, then 5-P, 50, 54, 58 and putter. I prefer the 3 wood for tee shots that need shaping especially if it deeds a big draw, they don't get overcooked as easily as a driver, but I seldom hit it off the deck unless its on a fantastic lie. I like dumping the 4 iron for the 9 wood because it gaps better for me, A controlled cut with a 5 is a piece of cake, and I can jump on the 9 and turn it over a bit if need be. Either option thus far has been more consistent for me than a 3 or 4 iron. I started carrying a 5 wood on occasion back in the 70's when most good iron sets had a 2 iron and woods were 1,3,4. I could hit the snot out a 2 back then, but stopping it/ predicting runout was a guessing game. A 5 wood was often the better option for me back then, and an indispensable part of the arsenal today.

As you guys may know, I went with the epic flash 3-wood instead of going with a 5-wood. It has such a compact head! Today, I put in a hrsdus smoke yellow RDX shaft and I have been hitting absolute bombs. Will try to get you some specs within the next hour or so.

Kid tried one and went with the Cobra Big Tour. We both hooked the Epic Flash like crazy.

Used to have a 3W (Epic Flash SZ) that I used at max. two times a round, and generally only only off the tee. Never felt confident using it off the deck and would never dream of using it out of the rough.

Did a woods fitting at Truespec with the idea of finding a 5W and got fitted into a Ping G425 Max 5 wood (17.5 degrees) with a Ventus Blue 7S.

What a club! Getting a ton of utility out of it. Easy to flight up or down off the tee and goes long enough for those shorter Par 4s (235-250 yards). Feel comfortable using it off the deck and out of the rough.

Super happy I made the switch and couldn't recommend it enough.

very nice. I’m using a sim ti 3 wood right now. Lofted up to 4 wood. But probably gonna switch to 5w. Am between g410 and epic flash standard if anyone has any thoughts I’d love to hear em. Would be used off the tee and deck

I personally found the new 3Ws just went too far and became pointless.

I hit my driver 275-290 with good consistency and the 3W was sneaking into the low end of that. The real problem with this was it became a club I could reliably hit from the tee to stay short of the trouble. For the courses around me, most layup areas are 240-250 not 270-280.

I also don't have 260yrds into that many par5s and if I do, it isn't usually a good idea to try.....

A 17* 4W cleared up all of this. Better gapping off the tee and a club I can hit into par5s if need be that has enough height to stop and be consistent.

17* 4W is exactly what im going with. epic flash 5 wood lofted down a degree.

I ditched the 3 wood and play a Ping g410 5 wood. Best move i’ve made! I use it on tight tee shots, and have a ton of confidence attacking greens on Par 5s!

I've always had a 5-wood in my bag . I tried using a hybrid a good number of years ago but just didn't see any benefits in my game to make the permanent switch.
