Golf Balls/Equipment/Global Sourcing Get Your Balls NOW

Had a conversation with a couple of different reps last week.  The global outlook on getting products to the states right now is grim.  Everyone needs to stock up on golf balls.  Rumor is Callaway will definitely have a shortage this summer to the point where they will run out.  I tend to think that in talking to others, the same is going to hold true across the board.  We will probably see an increase in price with balls as well across the board because petroleum is used to make them.

 

Speaking on equipment, they are having the same issues.  A lot of the heads and shafts are made in Asia.  Because of the global supply chains being stalled, the manufacturers can't get them in the states in a productive time frame.  This is why it is taking weeks to get product from the Equipment companies.  They are backed up because orders are waiting on product.  Shafts become another issue if you are using a Japanese brand.  If the shafts are made in the States (True Temper) the time frame becomes a little quicker.  Certain Brands are giving ship dates right now in September.

 

I circumvented the process to a degree with new clubs.  I purchased stock irons through a PDU.  I then ordered Nippon Shafts and when the shafts and Clubs come in, will get them re-shafted.  Otherwise I was looking at a July ship date.  Probably ended up paying retail when all said and done, but wasn't willing to wait until July.

I'm going to get on Nextdoor and Craigslist and buy up all the used "AAAA Grade ProV1's" I can find and then corner the market and make a killing when the shortage arrives.

Already seeing some of this. I coach HS golf and we get discounts on TM stuff. I went on the website to order some more TP5 balls for my daughter and they were gone. All they had was TP5X balls. I have never seen that before.

I don't think this is an issue for most tournament players anyway - typically only go through 2-3 dozen per season

Stopped at local Golf Mart today and picked up a dozen ProV1X's and a dozen TP5X's mostly because we were due for a reload.  Obviously, this thread int he back of my mind.   Plenty of balls in stock, but we will see what happens. Only time will tell.

Not a bad idea - was thinking of doing that prior to seeing this thread.  Being in different sport related business, I can tell you the supply chain issues right now are really proving to be a challenge to conduct business with any sense of normalcy.

So no effect on the ProV1's/TP5's (urethane) unless there is a run on those urethane balls because there are no surlyn balls to buy.

 

Note to self: investigate stock positions in DuPont and Dow Chemical.

While true, petroleum is still used to make the products.  

 

I am in the sporting goods industry.  Right now we are seeing about a 3% price increase in everything.  Double digit price increases in raw goods such as polyester and cotton.  Freight seems to rise a little each day.  Companies are trying to hold on to pricing, but before summer I see a price increase in golf balls and equipment as well.  The companies are finding it difficult to absorb a lot of the increases.

Or the increase in the price of oil driving the cost?  I'm guessing you mean both having their effect.  Seeing increases in consumer item prices out here in California as well.  We are getting ready to remodel (delayed due to COVID) and now the price of appliances like our range and fridge has gone up $500+ each and we can't get it until October/November. Not good.

Automobile New Car inventory is down 48% because the manufacturer's can't get chips in to finish off the vehicles.

 

It will get worse before it gets better as well.
