Relocating to North Myrtle Beach

Hey WRX!

I am relocating back South, and I am moving to North Myrtle Beach.

I spent 10 years in North Carolina. I'm currently in Boston and have been here almost 9 years. And now, I'm heading back to The Carolinas first week of July.

... North Myrtle Beach, specifically, what is the WRX Membership consensus on Golf Membership? Golf oriented, please.

Thanks for the support, WRX!

If I lived there my choice would be the Surf Club. Not a lot of good private options to be honest. Lots of decent to good golf but not many places to be a “regular” and have daily games.

Heard The Surf Club was nice.

Was thinking either The Surf Club or Beachwood.

It's not clear if you want to be a member somewhere to save $ or to
be a member of a private club.

Beachwood + Surf Club are far apart in what they offer.
Beachwood is a popular course with locals, budget golfers,
budget tourists, beginners, etc.

Surf Club is a private course, with very limited outside package play.
You may need a member reference and pay initiation.    It's an old style
course with excellent conditions.

I think most of the courses have some type of membership or freq player card.
MB has a Passport program for discounts at 48 hours.

MB has a wide range of prices and budgets to choose from.

The Dunes is a similar situation to Surf Club, but at a higher price level.

At Barefoot you have 4 premium courses.

Don't need Grand Dunes.

Barefoot sounds similar in price to Grand Dunes. Don't need that either.

My first preference was The Surf Club. You do need a member reference. I ended up further south into North Myrtle than expected. I'll be on 23rd Ave. S. So The Surf Club is about 4 miles away.

Beachwood is attractive because it is .3 miles away, and they offer grass range, short game facility. I do like to practice a bit.

I don't like to spend 6 hours playing 18 holes. Expense, a bit flexible, but again, don't need Grand Dunes or Barefoot.

ArtMBgolf was referring to the Dunes Club, not Grand Dunes.

We have a place on 4th Ave N and Beachwood and Surf Club couldn't be further apart.  Beachwood is 5-6 hour rounds unless you are one of the first groups off and any benefit you receive from grass practice facilities is lost as the conditions swing from pretty bad to ok out there.  Surf Club is always in fantastic shape, has a great clubhouse, pool, etc... and 4 miles is nothing.

Honestly I would rather not join anywhere over Beachwood.  You are better off getting the MB Golf Passport and playing anywhere you want.

If just practicing, the practice area at Grande Dunes is good.

If you are looking to join a private course near NMB, then
Surf and The Dunes are the top choices.
Grande Dunes Resort is a public course.
They also have the Grande Dunes Members course, which is
private, so it's an option, if you don't want to compete with
public players for tee times.

As far as public golf goes, use the MB Passport and play all
the courses then decide if any are best to hang out at.

The few other privates are south of MB, Wachesaw Plant,
Reserve Club, Debordieu.

Also even if you join Surf or Dunes or any other course it is still worth getting the MB Passport.  It is only like $50-$60 a year and it pays for itself almost immediately.  Gives you the option to jump on for a round to switch it up at a good price elsewhere.

Relocated Masshole here.

I'll echo the worth of the Passport program. My wife and I are members at the International Club, but also have the Passport so we can play "away rounds" at reasonable prices. They recently extended the booking window from 48 to 72 hours, and we've never had a problem getting a tee time through it. Some courses offer an unadvertised "locals price" that is even better than the discount card prices (Arrowhead lets locals play 18 with cart for $42 and every 5 rounds you get one free). It never hurts to ask if a course offers a locals price when you check in (this is true of some of the touristy restaurants and shops as well, but they won't give it to you if you don't ask for it).

I know you've said Grande Dunes is more than you want to do, but the upside is that it's owned by McConnell Golf, who also owns The Reserve down in Pawley's Island, as well as 12 other courses. If you're a member at one of them, you get reciprocal rights at all of them. I'm not sure if it was still going on, but they were running a "no initiation fee" special as recently as April.

One thing to be prepared for: for the most part, they don't do twilight golf down here. We were members at CC of Halifax back in MA, and would play almost every night after work. Sometimes 9 holes, sometimes 18, sometimes just 5 or 6. It seems like nobody does that down here. We show up, or call to get a tee time, and they're looking at us like we have 3 heads. The upside is that when we can get out there, it's some of the best PoP you can get down here.
