Any pyratone love?

Curious if anyone plays pyratones on a regular basis. Lots of really nice looking heads and stampings. I know very little about this era but am intrigued. Hit my Powerbilt set at the range and..........wow.......just...wow. Very sweet clubs  My concern is with the integrity of the shafts. I’ve had one break from another set and cut my hand. Other than that no complaints. Anyone else?

I've got a few sets and play them in my rotation of clubs.

 

Like you, however, I'm always a little wary of the shafts, they're mostly going to be over 70 years old and who knows how they've been stored in that time.

I’m working on fixing that “shaft trust” concern by having a set re-shafted with modern shafts. Heads are just too pretty (Wilson Walker Cups) to NOT play them. More to come on that project. In the mean time here’s a pic of another of my ‘tone sets.

I love pyratone shafts. I have an Iron Master that is great; everyone should have a green-shafted iron master. I also picked up a few sand wedges over the winter and they will all get some play this winter. One is an original Wilson Sand Iron and another has a shaft that isn't round, it has 6 sides...very cool club. I also recently grabbed an Armour 2 iron with a beautiful green shaft. I don't need it, but I couldn't leave it behind and risk having it melted down.

My playing partner who has gone full hickory this year had a set he'd bring out during our vintage rounds last year.  They felt GREAT!

I wouldn't re-shaft any, somehow defeats the point of having Pyratone clubs. 😃

What exactly is Pyratone, I had always assumed it was just painted steel?  Do have a couple pyratone clubs in the collection, including this gem.  Have a close older relative who has been collecting golf clubs on and off for years, when he heard  I had gotten into vintage and persimmon he decided to pass on some of his collection to me.    No old Macgregors or anything, but a few unique items including this Schavolite Driver.  I have been debating taking it to the range to hit it just once or twice (with a soft cover ball), the head feels solid as a rock, but worried it may crack as its essentially a 90 year old piece of laminated plastic.

I'm not sure but I think that Pyratone was a kind of celluloid material.  It certainly comes off in flakes when rust gets under it.

 

"Pyratone shaft" has become a bit of a catch-all name for non-chromed steel shafts, some of these actually have paint or some other material on them.

A better term would be a coated shaft.

 

Once chroming had achieved an acceptable standard its superior qualities meant that Pyratone and other finishes were gradually dropped.

Pyratone is also highly flammable.

Some real collections of beauties here, boys!  I have always thought of the pyratone era as a sort of golden era in golf as that more or less coincided with Bobby Jones playing days.
