Again...  you are missing the point, but go on with your rhetoric.

The only so called point you’ve made is that “all coaches are overpaid... and that anyone who does not think so lacks basic morality”. I’ve attempted to lay out an argument, you’ve done nothing more than reiterate, in various forms, that I’m clueless. This type of discourse isn’t helpful to anyone seeking to become better informed, worse, it’s polluted a fairly interesting topic. My apologies to you and everyone else for whatever part I might have played, and it’s best that we disconnect from our discussion.

lol…  I am not arguing.  I really don’t care what you have to say.  You wont change my mind.  Just because Saban gets paid what the market says doesn’t mean he isn’t overpaid.  My house is worth half a million dollars because that is what the market says it is.  It also isn’t worth half a million dollars.

i have a book on common sense if you would like to borrow it.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

That "market" is also quite conveniently a closed one in a lot of ways.  Sure you could consider NFL jobs as part of it, but there are only so many jobs.  But you have a system where a)the primary labor is not being paid, b)there are factors other than straight W/L that can impact things.

I would agree with you that coaches are overpaid.  Not in the sense of "it's too much money" or "no one should make that much money."  But when you consider that you have a)players not getting paid, b)a not for taxes, I mean not for profit setup in these athletic departments that means you have to spend the money,(where on earth can a golf coach get s $350k salary outside of P5?) and b)ADs who need to look good for their donor class, leading to "we can't let Coach X leave for a 'better' job, so let's up his salary" moves, you get the current situation.

It's a bit like wins above replacement in baseball.  Any player with the talent to have someone pay them to be on their team will produce a certain level of production with enough plate appearances.  A guy who hits 45 home runs isn't 45 home runs better than the first guy.  He is certainly better, but there is a certain floor that even the lowest pro will bring.  So it is with coaches at these schools.  Alabama is going to see a certain level of attendance and money flowing in just by turning the lights on.  Does Nick Saban increase that amount compared to Joe QB?  Sure.  It's finding that value that is tricky.

Because again, Saban's salary would be much lower if the players were getting paid.  He makes that money because the players can't.

The thing that gripes me the most is the buy out clauses when "said" coach doesn't produce.  It is incredibly insane.  College athletics is set up for the Institution, not the athlete.  Everything that is done in the walls of Universities is to protect the coaches, athletic directors, and the image of the institution.

UNC Charlotte told their women's coach 5 days before Christmas she could resign or be fired over allegations of Mental Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Racism.  This protected Holly Clark and the University.  By choosing to step down her records would never be released and the University doesn't go through something that tarnishes their image.  The Assistant Nick Robinson's contract wasn't renewed.  Both forced out of their positions.  Now Nick gets to work at University of Tennessee with no one dipping into the allegations of what happened at UNCC.  Their is an ugly side to NCAA D1 athletics....  very ugly.

Once it became about the $$$$ bills is when it got this way.  These stadiums, fields, practice facilities at the universities are incredibly ridiculous.  The money spent on these things rather than the best interest of the athlete is disheartening.

My biggest issue is the fact that in a number of cases you have student fees supporting facilities that only 2% of students can ever access.

Well don't kid yourself, it was always about the money.  It just wasn't talked about.  Point shaving in college hoops goes back to the 40s, and there's a reason it's happened more than once.

The thing about market economics is that markets are not universally intelligent.

330 million population with a mean IQ of 98 means that 16.7% -- 53 million people -- have an IQ of 84 or less.

If you need confirmation, just get in your car go for a drive. 😉

I realized I forgot something I was going to add.  In what other line of work could someone get away with behavior like Tom Izzo's?  The guy looks like he is about to have an aneurysm yelling at players right in their faces.  No way he can even approach that type of behavior without the power coaches have(had?) over athletes.
