Wilson Dynapower and Macgregor

Recommended Posts

Sorry everyone I am a newb here so hope this is the place to write this. I recently went through my grandfathers attic, and found what seems to be some old clubs, looks like a full set of wilson and then 3 different macgregor woods.. I was wondering if anyone here might have some more info on these? Like the year and if these have any value, I do not plan on selling them I am just curious about them.

The Staffs with the two stripes are 1966, the Turfriders are 1962, the sand wedge is a 1961, the Mac woods are 1960, indicated by the EOM 60 on the sole. Values vary significantly base on condition, grips, and if the set is complete. Your best bet is to look on eBay for sold pricing, match model and condition to yours, and then guess. The market is screwy this year, so I stopped guessing on pricing.

They are all nice clubs. Many of us still play 60's Staff irons, I have several sets myself, and the woods are the end of the classic Macgregors. I don't have '66 Staffs, but I have sets the set that came before and the 5 sets that came after. The '67s are in my bag now and play wonderfully, the '69s are going back in for tomorrow.

I prefer Macs with fiber inserts, and those are among the last few years before Macgregor went to plastic. The sand wedge is a real find, the Dynapower sand wedges are legendary for a reason. On yours, you will notice that the sand wedge is Dyna-powered and the irons are Dynapower, a switch they made with the Turfriders (along with a switch to red plugs) and kept for all subsequent models. I've never had a black plug sand wedge (although I have 3 sets of Dynapowered irons) but I'm on the look out for one...eventually one will fall into my lap.

One might just have. Let me check my inventory and I'll get back to you

That's great info, I'll have to take them out and give them a try. If the sand wedge is that special, I may just have to put that one up though, hate to ruin a rare find.

Play it, you might be surprised!

It's not pristine, it looks like your grandfather used it, so you won't be spoiling it by giving it a try. No harm in giving it a try.

Play them and enjoy them.  You really can't "ruin" them in any way.  Your Grandfather had good taste in clubs and I'll agree with everything that everyone has contributed.  But I'll double-down on that wedge.  It's a very cool club and that era of Wilson wedges were the beginning of all the modern sand wedge designs.  The reason that club would be very popular today is because it still works!  So many of the current designs look similar and took their cues from those classic Wilson wedges in terms of shape and bounce.  A very desirable club even today for good players.  It's cool that you found them and now you get a chance to enjoy them too.  Good luck and good golfing!
