PXG Gen 4 T, hit them better than P and XP

sorry this is another PXG thread, please feel free to move it!

 

I had an iron fitting this week with an independent fitter who stocks everything including PXG. I was trying to find if there was anything better than my Lynx VT forged irons. After an 1 1/2 hours of trying just about every head shaft combination, it was pretty clear that I hit the PXG Gen 4 T better than anything else. I was a little shocked as this is the 'tour' model, but I hit it higher and further than the P, and just didnt get on at all with the XP. Has anyone else had the same experience, I'm not a great ball striker at all, but just seem to get on better with the smaller heads. At the end of the session the fitter recommended that I keep my irons as there was no significant performance difference between the PXG and Lynx clubs - which I was a little disappointed at, as I fancied some new clubs.

Interesting results. I’ve heard golfers tend to focus more on a smaller club face. I will say if I remember correctly the lynx were a pretty small face so maybe more what you’re use to as well?

The Gen4 P is 2* stronger loft than the G4 T.  So, hitting the T higher and longer is rather unusual especially with the same shaft.

The P size is mostly thicker than the T with not much difference in head length, top line, or sole width.

 

 

 

I have both sets of the G4 T and P and no question, I hit the P 8 iron further than the T 8 iron...........

What is the major difference between these heads? Sole width. Would need to see your data, but I am betting you come in steep to impact. Looking at all the factors, I would look at sole width. Players who come

over the top, or who hang back or any move that makes you steep, those players often will have better contact with thinner soles and lower bounce irons. And it will make the ball go higher coming in real steep. Check out some TXG videos on this. They make this point often about mid-handicappers who have a swing flaw that works better with thinner soles. 
 

Would need to see it on vid to diagnose, but it is likely not blade length. I’d say hit them again. Also, launch monitors are one thing, but it is on a golf course where the forgiveness of the P and XP really show up.

I am steep with the irons …. and also love thin soles

 

This is VERY RELEVANT in firm conditions where for me fat soles = disaster

 

related note, I hit the Gen 4 ST amazingly high and far .. waiting on a Parson’s price drop, though they will never drop to the 211ST BARGAIN we have on now

so the Lynx VT are a small head, little offset and a thin sole.

I'll post some data sets when I get them from the fitter, but I'm not steep, 4* down, 4* from the inside, hit a push,push draw. I was hitting from mats as it's winter here in Germany now, maybe this has an effect, but I dont normally take large divots. I'm no unhappy with the fitting results, just seems a little odd thats all :-).

So why not just embrace the fact you hit them better?  Also what clubs did you hit in the set?  If it was just a 7 iron you might consider a combo set with the T in the middle and shirt irons and the P in the longer irons.

Seems like a pretty honest fitter telling you that you don’t need to upgrade instead of typically trying to sell you a newer product because they need to make the sale rather than what you actually need. 
 

I mean if you just want newer (but looks like not necessarily better) clubs, then you can get those ones that were no better than you for that newer feel.

happy to embrace it will go 6&7P and 8-GW T. Mitsubishi MMT shaft -but probably Gen 3 and not Gen 4, they are just better value
