Handicap needed for a NESCAC Roster?

What is the handicap needed to make a NESCAC roster? I'm considering trying out for my colleges team either next year or the year after that. I've been golfing for 10 months and have taken it more seriously in the past 4 and I'm down to a 12 handicap, I'm wondering if I have even a shot of being good enough or if it is a waste of time.

I've never heard of the NESCAC until this, but it seems like it's a DIII athletic conference in the northeast??? Anyway, a 5 second google search showed the results from their conference championship tournament last year. 

 

If you're wondering if you have any chance of making a team just take a look at these scores, and ask yourself if you could consistently shoot lower scores than these. And be honest with yourself. If the answer is "yes" then you have a chance. If the answer is "no" then obviously you don't. 

 

FYI to get a realistic idea of how your game stacks up you should asses your scores against theirs by playing from the same yardages with no mulligans, gimmes, "do-overs", counting all penalty strokes, and basically not doing anything else that is against the rules.

Agree with ABH.  I will add, don't look at it from the perspective of beating the #5 golfer.  Look at it from the perspective of beating the #3.  The coach already has #5 golfers.

It is possible to make the switch from baseball to golf if you are in the right location and have good contacts.

 

One of my employees went to a D-III school (RIC) to pitch. He got wore out/injured, and ended up on the golf team his Jr. season. The athletic department already knew him as he was an athletic scholarship guy, who was able to get some academic scholarships and the baseball coach put in a good word to the golf coach. He started practicing with the golf team in the fall and got his scoring down around level par in practice rounds. He was able to play in about 10 events during their spring season. He told me it was some of the most fun he ever had.

 

He is almost 40 now, and golfs about 2x a year. He is able to pick up clubs after a year and shoot 4 over, makes me sick.

 

He only played golf in high school, but obviously has elite level hand eye coordination. One look at his swing and you know he is a gamer. May be possible for you too, nothing better than being young with time to spare. Why not try!

NESCACs are usually playing in pretty bad weather.  Keep that in mind too when looking at their scores.  Great conference with great schools.  Good luck.
