If this is the ultimate bunker and rough club how could you not open up the club face for bunker and flop shots?

maybe they were talking about tight lies and opening up….

Judging by the looks of it, it looks like opening it up on tight lies would be a no go. I very rarely attempt a flop shot, especially with a tight lie, and if I’m in a bunker I’m just trying to get it out 😂

I’m only flopping from the rough lol. A tight lie I most likely using another wedge l

I play a 58.14K SM9 as my highest lofted wedge, with a 54.12D and 50.08F as well.

This is all my opinion, based on my technique, playing in the US Gulf Coast, and US South generally. Almost always on Bermuda grass, with occasional Rye overseed in winter. As usual, your mileage my vary due to your conditions and technique.

You can play open face shots off 58.14K wedges off tight lies, if by "tight" you mean closely mown grass. What you WILL need is a soft undersurface to get the leading edge to drop under the ball. If you can't hear a good, slightly mushy "thawack" sound when the sole of the club hits the ground, it's probably too hard underneath the grass for that sole grind. It isn't that it CANT be done, but it's just not an optimal design for hardpan, no grass lies. After practicing some with it you'll understand the sound and feel you need to know the turf interaction will be good.

Everything is always a tradeoff right? The upside with a 14K is that as long as the ground isn't baked out, you essentially don't have to worry about getting stuck on greenside wedge shots. In exchange, you lose a little bit of confidence on lies where the ground is really hard unless you got some fluffy grass on top.

Easiest thing to do is just find an old SM8 or so and try it out. The difference shouldn't be so much between models that you can't get a good idea of if the sole bounce/grind is right for you.

K grind doesn't need to be opened up for shots out of the bunker or rough due to the width and camber of the sole.  It's designed to give you the benefits of an opened face wedge, but with a square face.  You can certainly open it up and see if that works for you, but it's not necessary.

And one other thing… I can’t explain it technically, but my 58K can be played toe down, with a slightly closed face (if you ken the shot I’m talking about) just fine without being clunky feeling at all. Better than an M grind for that shot, if it’s a shot you ever use.

I play on Kikuyu in Southern California and it’s the ideal club for most of the year but when the fairways are mowed short and the turf and sand traps get firm in the spring the 14k becomes almost unusable. So much so that I’m considering a second lob wedge just with lower bounce for that time of the year.

Firm sand is this club’s kryptonite.
