Course conditions

Recommended Posts

Thoughts on a tournament being played at a course under construction.Being played with  2 temporary greens (mowed down fairways), 1 temporary hole (a practice hole used for teaching in place of a hole that's closed), and all lakes dug up being rebuilt.

Tee box, fairways, and green (except for 2 temps) are all in great condition however.  There's piles of dirt on the sides of several fairways, large pipes, and hauling equipment as well. And the normal red penalty area lakes are all under construction.  No clearly defined markings anywhere anymore because of this.

It's an IMG World 2-day qualifying tournament.  Would you play? Complain? Other?

Thanks to Google Maps, course conditions today are somewhat easy to determine beforehand or a person can play the course before the event to measure conditions.  If it's not up to expectations skip the event.  I wouldn't complain, though.

welcome to tournament golf!!!!

Sometimes courses need to fill thier teesheet and decide that a junior tournament will do it.

I would like to say you can avoid bad course conditions but every tour out their has disasters awaiting kids to play.

The only thing you can do it try to pick and choose your courses.  For the most part that works but don’t be surprised to arrive and see punched green and other BS.

At the end of the day everyone plays the same course and just understand that course condtions will hurt scores some more then others.

If you know the course condtions are bad before hand then don’t do it.  If it’s too late for a withdrawl or can’t change tournaments go ahead and just play it and try and use it as a learning experience.

I wouldn’t waste your time asking for a refund. Now if the tour can’t find decent places to play either they are not charging enough or just don’t care. If they don’t care find another tour.

If it's your only way to qualify for IMG Worlds and you want to go to IMG Worlds, then everyone else will be playing the same conditions as you.  Play on.

Unfortunate timing, but near in mind the course would play the same for everyone.

I think it depends on the age, honestly.  Reason is if JGS rankings are involved.  At 11 it doesn't matter while at 14 it does.

JGS ranked event for sure, with season points towards next years IMG as well.

Sure it's the same course for everyone, but with so much stuff unmarked I'm thinking there's going to be some flexibility with the rules.  GUR vs. penalty area, and some looseness on where these hazard areas begin and end since nothing is marked. This has the potential of not making the course play the same for everyone.

Spence and his team will have everything marked and updated on the local rules sheet.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Something to keep in mind with JGS is the bottom 25% of scores do not count.  So a bad score is a setback it's not the end of the world if you have to play a event in terrible conditions.

You are right about it not playing the same for everyone.   Different groups are going to interpret the rules differently unless an official is on every hole and even they may not agree.  Just no way around it.

If it was me I would avoid it since you seem to be already on the fence.  If your kid is over 13 img worlds is not really something to worry about. If there under 13 then don't worry about JGS rankings because no one other than parents are looking at them.

This threat made me think of the 18th green at the MAAC conference championship today.  I’m shocked that they’d play a televised conference championship on that.

That looks like it is dead and running at a 15+.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.
