Higher launching driver shaft

Recommended Posts

I’m currently bagging a Ping G400 with the stock Alta CB Regular flex shaft. Swing speed is around 93 mph. Everything is ideal with this setup. My angle of attack averages 6° up.

I picked a Mizuno STZ 220 head and paired it with a Mitsubishi Diamana S+ Limited shaft. I love this head however my launch angle is a bit low with this combo in the 12-14° neighborhood. Would love to pick up a shaft that promotes a higher launch.

Any suggestions?

Consider a Tensei CK Orange 60 R.

It’s counterbalanced, like your Ping shaft. It’s a stock shaft on several Ping drivers and can often be found as a pull at a good price.

Stick with what you know works.  It's easy to find those Alta's on ebay that you could put into the mizuno.

Another similar (and very inexpensive) option would be the Aldila NVS 55.

Not sure why I didn’t connect the dots with just putting a Mizuno tip on an Alta shaft. And I also happen to have a NVS Orange 55 shaft sitting in the corner of my office and siting to be used.

Give it a go and see what happens.  The only downside to the NVS is that it's not a high balance point shaft like the Alta - so the head weight / swing weight might not allow you to play it quite as long as you would with the Alta.    Depends on how much you can manipulate the head weight - not familiar with the Mizuno to say.    But then I've never been a fan of am's playing drivers too long - so it might end up being a good thing to play it a little shorter.

I have the NVS shaft with a PXG adapter and didn’t care for it much but might give it a go in the Mizuno head. I typically play driver at 45” but might trim the NVS to 44.5” playing length to see if that helps with feel.

sounds like you may have a plan, but throw another recommendation for the grafalloy prolaunch blue in there. Pretty inexpensive on the bay.

Hey @Stuart_G

Curious on your thoughts. I’ve got the NVS 55 in the Mizuno STZ but everything is starting right of my target line. I tried turning up the loft to close the face a bit but to no avail. If the shaft is too soft would that cause it to start to the right?

It's not the more common response to a shaft that's too soft - but it certainly is very possible.   It's also very possible it may be something else entirely.  For most, playing length, shaft weight or swing weight are way more influential on the accuracy than shaft stiffness.   Butt diameter could also be different from previous shafts resulting in a different grip size - even if the same exact grip model is used.

So first question would be, with the different shaft and playing length, how much time did you spend trying to dial in the head weight?

Howard's tutorial can be used to help you dial in shaft weight and head weight and check the playing length.   Once that's done, then you can start to think about shaft stiffness as a possible cause.

Interesting observations.

Playing length is the same as my current gamer (Ping G400 with Alta CB). Not sure if the CB shaft in the Ping is making that big of a difference.

Hadn’t really though about Howard’s tutorial since I’m hitting center of the face but I’ll start there.

Maybe I confused your comment about what you "might" do to the length with something I though you already had done.  But it's not out of the question that a shaft balance point change can throw things off a bit.

Center face contact is certainly the most important thing - and the first thing - to look at as far as fitting goes and the influence of the equipment on the ball flight - but it's not the only thing.  Weight and length can effect many other aspects of delivering the club into impact - rhythm, tempo, release timing and face control and even swing plane and path - being just a few of the other important factors.
