10 year old carry distance, average score and average tournament distance.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Just curious what everyone's 10 year old distance, average score and average tournament distance is or was.

My son just turned 10 a few weeks ago, small for his age, 4'3, 65 lbs soaking wet.

I let him play anywhere from 4000 yards up to 5700 yards, basically level 2 yardages( 4000 yards ), his age group yardage ( 4400-4600 yards ),  and Red Tee or the ladies tee here ( 5300-5700 yards )

**Some courses don't have forward tees, so we play from the closest one which is the ladies tee.**

From 4000-4200 yards, he shoots around 70-75, went under par a handful of times, I say 74ish is more his average tournament score.

From 4400-4600 yards, he shoots around 76-82, best was 75, I say his average tournament score is more around 79-80ish.

From 5300-5700 yards, he shoots around 84-88, best ever was 78 ( non tournament score ), I say his average is around 86ish.

Practice rounds have a lower average compare to tournament numbers by no more than a handful at most.

His current CARRY distance is....   Driver SimMax2 with a Flynn Driver shaft (36.5inches) we replace the 24G back weight and replaced with a 6G back weight on the driver head. FW and Hybrid we are using the old Flynn golf woods, irons we are using the new irons.

Driver 155-160 average, can get up to 170-175, happens more than just that lucky shot, but not consistent to where we mark that as his carry distance. Ball path on the higher side, do not get much roll after the ball drops, 5-8 yard rolls after max.

FW 115-120 carry.

Hybrid 110 carry.

6i      115 carry

7i      105 carry

8i      95 carry

9i      85 carry

P      80 carry

52"   70 carry

56"   60 carry

60"   Green side use only ( within 40 yards )

We tried using OEM irons and wedges like many of the kids online or kids we see in tournaments but the weight was too much for my boy, we like the lighter weight club heads for his swing, at least for now.

My son is 15 thus don’t remember his scores or carry distance to your kind of detail. I do remember a number of 90s and 87s as a 10yr old and don’t think he ever broke par from any distance. He was probably driving 150yds as a kid.

Your sons carry and scores read very impressive for a 10yr old.  Congrats.

A piece of advice from an obsessive father to another - it does not matter.  I remember fretting, analyzing, comparing and dissecting data to answer the question.  The answer is always the same, “ what they do as kid has no bearing on their game in the future”.

ironically, I was bored at work yesterday and decided to go down memory lane. I checked out my sons scores when he was 10-12 and where some those top kids are today under JGS.  There were some really surprising and frankly scary revelations.

There was this kid who we played with as 12-13 yrs old, really good golfer, shot par and under, good swing, great attitude.  His shot differentials in JGS is now over 8-9 strokes and he has barely played the last 6-9 months.  I actually want to learn from that experience more than anything else.

This happens more than people think.  Still the overwhelming majority of kids participating in USKG Worlds has a direct correlation of going onto playing at college.  There are those that have fallen off the map.

In 2014 in the 12 year old field that included Akshay, Canon Claycomb, Karl Villips, and a host of other big names the champion is now just a normal college student.  After that win he had limited success, game was strangled by dad, and by his senior year was delegated to just playing HS golf.  In HS he wasn't even the best player on his team his junior and senior year.

You then have Allen Kournkikova who everyone saw in The Short Game on Netflix.  Several times World Champion who now struggles to break par in tournaments.  Still a really good golfer, but has fallen off the map.

When you are on top of the world at that age, there is only one way to go.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

My son turns 10 this week, plays competitively and is slightly bigger, 4'6" and maybe 70 lbs.  All his yardages in same ballpark.  Just cracking 100 mph ball speed on Driver.

4'3" and that weight those are definitely long numbers.

My almost 10yr old (turns 10 next month) is 4'10" and 72-73lbs and his distances are about the same.. lol maybe a few yards more on driver + woods but more or less the same. I must say though, we have played with enough kids in his age group in some larger tournaments and it can be demoralizing at times for the kid to see some of these kids hit 30-40 yards longer. We played in USKG worlds last year in round 1 and were paired up with a kid who ended up finishing top 3 who was almost driving greens at 220-230 yards out and my then just turned 9 yr old was driver + PW 🤣 It was not just that one kid, most kids we were paired up were a good 20yards longer atleast (carry might have been lesser, but they were all hitting low bullets). It does make parenting/caddying a challenge at times 🙂
