Anyone recommend a remote electric cart that will do really well going UP and DOWN a hilly golf course?

Recommended Posts

I’ve used a push cart for years on my extra hilly golf course. It’s just become too much work. I want an electric golf cart that i can control with follow or remote that I can really trust traveling both up and down hill. I don’t want to spend 2K only to watch the cart tip over on hills.  Anyone have a recommendation?

You don't want an electric cart following you up steep terrain. That's just asking for trouble. Same advice goes with down slopes unless you want to get run over. If you mainly play a hilly course then a follow cart isn't a good fit.

Traversing hilly courses with any electric cart requires the users guidance to at least some degree. The steeper the grade, the more attention it needs.

Get a cart with straight ahead tracking (gyro). They work great on side slopes. Without you will be constantly fiddling with the remotes L/R buttons.

I'm in the MGI camp. Either the Zip Navigator or its AT cousin from Costco would be my choice.

Thanks very much. I’ll look at some stuff on line about those two MGI models.  The whole reason I want one is because of the hills. This is good to know.  Thanks again.

I'm not sure how hilly the courses you playv are but i have the Zip Nav AT and with a small addition of a 5LB diving belt weight under the front wheel frame, the cart handles the hills on a few Bew England courses well.

Two things, if the grass is wet or dewey, you will need to guide it, second, slower is better.  Early on i had the thought to get up faster but I found a speed of 2 or 3 works best.

Good luck

Rovic RV1S paired with the eWheels V2.  I've put about 150 rounds on my setup with most rounds on a really hilly course.  It is like a remote control caddy.  I do not use the tether (follow).  I always have my cart in front of me.  The V2 has a built in gyroscope to maintain course so it does really well on side-hills as well.

Depending on which push cart you already have, you can look at the eWheels V2 and use it with your current cart.  I have a ClicGear 3.5 and have never had any tipping issues at all.  Extremely stable.  Like Maroon_19 said above, the remote control works great - I wouldn't use the tether either.  This way you can get into the entire setup for under $1k I believe.  If you don't like your current cart, the MGI line is very good as is CartTek.  There is a very good review of the eWheels and the MGI on youtube.  A quick search will show you a few.

I think pretty much every electric cart is going to have the extended extra rear wheel attachment to prevent tipping over on up slopes.  It is an absolute must.  I don’t think you will find any problem at all with down slopes.

That said, I keep my hands on the handle on severe uphills and side hills.  The motor is doing the work anyway, so I’m not pushing at all, and very light pressure from me keeps the cart both going where I want it to and from any tipping issues.  As soon as the ground levels a little, I go back to the remote.

This is the exact issue that kept me from getting the eWheels for my Clicgear.  I liked the price, the reviews, and the fact that I already had all the accessories I wanted, but I couldn’t wrap my head around needing to freewheel and push on the most difficult parts of the golf course.  To me, there is all the difference in the world between that and just guiding the cart with one hand while the motor does the pushing.  Handle controls AND a remote seemed ideal, and they have been.

You want the Zip Navigator AT. Every cart will struggle with severe slopes so don’t have unrealistic expectations. Unless the cart has tracks like a tank it will occasionally need to be steadied on some hills.

Echoing what others have said relative to MGI.  It handles hills and steep terrain very well.  The only time I've seen the MGI struggle on a steep up slope was when playing as a dew sweeper on wet grass and the wheels wanted to slip.

I have the ClicGear 3.5 / V2 combination and play a very hilly course - I never push it on hills or anywhere else frankly. You may want to push up on the handle on a really steep incline to keep the front wheel on the ground, but you do it with the motor running so you aren’t pushing at all. The only other time I touch the handle is for a narrow bridge we have because the ClicGear is too wide to traverse it - on that bridge I have to push up on handle to get the rear wheels over the sides and roll it on the front wheel across the 8 foot long bridge.

I have other issues with the combo I have (including said bridge) but stability on hills is not one of them.
