Most painless way to compile strokes gained without using sensors?

Recommended Posts

I use a Garmin S42 watch.

Prior to getting CT10 sensors, I used the Garmin Golf app to manually enter which club I hit on which shot. I'd normally do this in the car after each round while everything was fresh on my mind. With only 40-45 full shots per round it wasn't that hard.

I started with just a few sensors but ended up doing my whole bag. Now my watch captures club data pretty reliably and it never asks me which club I hit after any specific shot. I still go into Garmin Golf and edit my round. Sometimes there will be a few extra shots or missing shots.

Way back in the day I came up with a stat tracking system I'd keep on an extra line on my score card. I'd rate my drive on a scale of 1-10, circle that number if I had a GIR, and put dots in each corner of the box for each putt I needed. It worked well but it wasn't club-specific like the sensors.

I have a buddy who also uses an S42 watch and we argue about whether it's better to track ALL shots with a specific club or just the ones that went as expected. For instance, if he uses his 5 iron to punch out he won't enter the club data on that shot in Garmin Golf. He says that 20 yard shot doesn't belong in his 5 iron stats because he wasn't trying to hit a full 5 iron. He sort of has a point. I guess I could delete those shots after they're picked up by my sensors, but I don't see the point.

Circles (drawmorecircles.com) is fantastic! Collection through their printout (can go straight into webapp if you want) takes ~10 seconds after each hole. Easy to input post round. This method ensure the data is super accurate and the insights and actions are amazing!

taylormade my roundpro app will do it. you can use it during round but takes too much time for me. Write down your shots and putts then after go the the website and input information.

I use an Apple watch and the GolfPad app, no sensors. After hitting, just tap the watch, pick the club you used, and go to the next shot. It tracks the distance when you pick the next club from the next location. I think most smartphone golf apps have this functionality, watch and sensors not necessary, but having the watch for input and distance to green is definitely nicer to use than pulling out the phone each time.

After doing strokes gained via Decade for the last 40 rounds, I'm going back to using an excel sheet with a mix of GIR, Tiger 5, and hole scoring average.

Putting, in particular, is too hard to accurately gauge distance and remember lengths, pins, etc. Yeah there's ways around it but it's hard enough entering my score, GIR, FW and # of putts into an app after every hole.

I also want to "own" my data and hate the idea of paying $200+ per year

You got a spreadsheet that you would share with us? 👀

It's just an excel sheet via Google Sheets.

I'm at a private club and play the same course every day. I'm more concerned with hole-to-hole scoring averages and GIR.

Two other "custom" stats I track are:

Birdie Chances: Birdie putts within 15ft

Bad Swing: If I'd like to be able to replay a shot. Highlights what holes I'm making bad decisions.

Nice.  I have some custom stats, too.  BGIR = Big green in regulation.  That's when I'm either on the green or the fringe or a couple feet off with a flat, easy chip.  And I keep track of my "Average Club In".  I add up the number on the iron used in my approach shot, with all wedges equaling 10.  I get a total and divide it by 18.  Gives me an idea of how well I'm driving the ball.  On my course (longish) if I average an 8 iron I'm playing well.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
