Member-Guest Etiquette...

Thanks for your time. I have searched the internet for an answer to this question without success.

I am attending a member-guest tournament next week.  I have a good friend who is a business partner, 3 time a year member-guest partner in other events, fellow board member, and has set me up with two long term relationships over the past 3 years.  This friend is also playing in the same event, but with a different partner.    He has told me out of "respect" that he will not bet on my team.  This friend has told me that there is a well known UNWRITTEN rule at member-guest events to never pari-mutuel bet on a friend's team.  I have pointed out that this is not an auction, therefore we are not competing on buying his team, which I agree it would not be appropriate to bid each other up.   I believe my friend and his partner are well positioned to outright win this event.  I believe my friend believes that my team has a low likelihood of finding our way into the finals at this event.

Can everyone please advise if it is "disrespectful" or not appropriate to pari-mutuel bet on a friend's team in a member-guest tournament?

That’s nuts. Absolutely ok to bet on friends. Isn’t that the whole point? Also ok to buy friend’s teams in a Calcutta. Shouldn’t all members be friends? Who would buy teams if you couldn’t buy friend’s teams?

That sounds ridiculous, but I suppose it could be true for that club.

At smaller clubs, most members know, and are friends with, other members. It’s practically impossible to place a wager that isn’t betting on a friend.

Also, with friends, you know their game and what they are capable of. Having inside information makes it easier to win bets.

If it’s a horserace-type bet, he likely wants to be the only one to bet on himself, then when they win, they don’t have to split the pot.

If you CAN wager on them, bet on whoever you’d like. This is the first time I’ve ever heard/read about an unwritten rule like this.

I'd worry that you risk a friendship and business partner.  He might be wrong - but he'll think he's right, and he'll think you screwed him, and possibly hold it against you in future.  In business deals - you need trust.

Winning a battle for a couple of bucks vs losing the war is stupid.   Sometimes you have to eat your pride - if you value the relationship more.  Kinda like being married...

Argue about it after the tournament.

It’s totally fine to bet on a friend’s team. Never heard otherwise. And… how would he even know? At our club no one knows who you placed a bet on except the guy who runs the betting.

How would he know?  1) if we wins the club will reveal him; 2) the partner could ask him? and 3) the OP would know.

Could he get away with it?  Sure.  But under the circumstances presented but he OP - he'd be required to ignore the wishes of the Partner (even if the Partner is dead wrong); and/or he'd have to tell a lie.  IMO trusted business partners are hard to find.  They trust each other as much (if not more than) spouses.   If you think it's ok to tell white lies and ignore your spouse - without consequences - you're a smarter man than me.  🙂   Business partners can't operate well together if they don't cooperate.   Agree to a strategy - then execute as planned.  But that won't work if one partner decides on his own to ignore the advice of the other (particularly after they've discussed it).  M/G's betting wins you a couple thousand.  But to risk a business partnership that could make millions?  Stupid choice.

Curious how this played out? I agree that it’s not bad to bet on his team but also agree that it’s up to you if you want to make him mad for a few hundred (MAYBE thousand).

Also curious what others think of not buying yourself? When I’m playing like s*** I don’t want to buy myself but would get crucified at my club for not
