If you don't mind buying used, here are a few excellent performing sets for the limited budget (less than $300!!!). One set for the low-handicapper, one set for high handicapper. (I bought all these sets USED either on Ebay or Craigslist).

Wood: Titleist 906 F2 (2006): $45 [one of the best woods ever: great workability and long of tee]

In general, iron technology hasn't really changed that much to justify spending hundreds of dollars more than what you can find in a used set. My favs are Titleist 962 ($60), Titleist 990 ($90), Titleist 735 CM ($125), aforementioned Mizuno MP 14, MP33, MP60, and PingEye 2s.

But for your money, Cleveland is usually gives you the best bang for your buck. TA5's are classic.
