Wedges - Help needed

Recommended Posts

I am in need of wedges, and I am trying to decide between the Vokeys and the TM MG3 wedges. I currently have Vokeys sm7’s, however I have heard so much good stuff about the MG3 that I am curious. I have never played a TM wedge at all. Are the wedges very similar. Is there any pros or cons to Either one?

If it matters, I am a 12 handicap who’s pretty consistent with my wedges. My tendency is to come up short, which is not the wedges fault of course. I am on the steeper side as well.

Thanks for any feedback.

If you are naturally steep, I would recommend looking at the Ping Glide wedges.  Their bounce profile will help you get through the turf easier.  Both the wedges you list above are great.  Not much difference between the brands these days aside from grind and bounce profile.

Good luck and have fun.

WEdges! the best part of the bag. I have tried the MG3 and they are a fantastic wedge. Great shape, heavy feel but soft off the face. I have tried to get the glide 3.0 out of the bag for the last two seasons, but they are just so good. I have stopped trying. I prefer them to the 4.0.

Next choice would be the sm9. Really like those as well.

Vokey's come in quite a few different sole grinds.  The D grind works well with steeper swings like yours and mine but can be a little tricky on hardpan fairways. I have quite a few vokey laying around out in my garage with various grinds and change em up every now and then.

Like the other posters have already stated, the TM MG3 and Cleveland RTX are really nice wedges also.

I've gone on a wedge quest in the last couple months. For the last few years my bag has rotated through Ping Glide and Zipcores, and a little time with SM8. Zipcores are/were great up until I moved from NY to NC in June.

3 weeks ago I did a wedge fitting/demo with TM. The MG3 were so so with a clunky feel and high flight. The new hi toe worked great with a lower flight, incredibly consistent and a great feel. I tried different bounces in both lines for different lofts.

Last week I did a Titleist Thursday fitting. I've never been a fan of Vokey, but for whatever reason I've been playing an SM8 54S and 58D more often than not since I moved. At the fitting I was moved from a 58D to a 58M bc of the turf changes, and for those softer few months I can go back to the D grind. The flight is also very consistent and lower with the Vokeys which I appreciate.

Bottom line, find places and/or events where you can try lots of stuff.

Signature!

Post-COVID, this may be more difficult. Talked to a Callaway rep and also our club pro, and both said most of the OEMs are going to scheduled fittings. OEM reps come to your club or shop, give you a scheduled fitting on particular category of clubs. And, you get a slight discount if you buy that day. (The Callaway fitting cost ~$50, but we all got a dozen Chrome Softs for coming.)

And, you can try out other clubs off to the side, a la old demo days.
