Just bought P790 but they are small even though I have been fitted for 0.5 inch longer?

Recommended Posts

With my game improving I have been fitted and gone for the Taylormade P790.  I was currently using 2019 M2's with standard length, regular REAX HL 88 shaft.

Although these have been a great improvement iron I bought them off the shelf ( silly I know ) and they are just too short, launch too high, too light and too spinney.

I could hit a 7 iron easily 175-180 yards but was getting over 8800rpm spin and leaking them out to the right alot.

Drastic change with my P790 I have gone stiff flex with S300 Dynamic gold shaft. Spin rate down to 5500rpm , shaft produces less side spin so I have a lovely 8-10 yard fade with a nice decent angle averaging 49 degree so happy the ball will stop even with the lower spin rate. I am losing 5 to 6mph ball speed and some distance due to the heavier shafts and obvious loft difference but the balls going so much straighter, has a better flight so its maybe worth the compromise.

Biggest issue I have is I'm doing all this without quite hitting the sweet spot of the club face but hitting low down on the face so is that down to the length of the club maybe.

On Taylormades website it states both the M2 7 iron & the P790 7 iron are the same standard length of 37 inches. With me ordering 0.5" longer you would then expect the P790 to be longer but they hare still both the same size.  I have seen the order sent to taylormade from the fitter which clearly says 0.5" longer and taylormade say they have sent me out a club thats 0.5"longer but both clubs are still the same length?

Just wondered if anyone has experienced this? will 0.5" make a that much of a difference? Am i a fool to moan about the club going straighter even though a lose a little yardage.

Appreciate if someones been in the same situation with the club length of their P790.

Have you measured the club to see how long it actually is?

Definitely not length if it's the 7 iron.    Too short is not going to cause any problems in the mid irons - only in the shortest irons (PW/GW/SW/LW).

Could have something to do with the heavier shaft weight, something with the swing weight, shaft stiffness, or possibly even lie angle.

Not based on what I'm seeing.

P790 7 iron is 36.75" for steel shafts. 1/4" shorter than the M2 7 iron.  The 37" 7i length is only for graphite shafts in the P790's.  (Which is a bad idea to have different lengths - but that's a different topic).

So at +1/2" it's only 1/4" longer than the M2's - which can very easily look like the same length if not using an actual club ruler to measure.

Typically the length of a club will move the strike either towards the toe or heel vs up or down the face.  If you are getting center contact but just lower on the face, it probably has more to do with the weight difference between the 2 shafts.  Give yourself some time to get used to the higher shaft weight - it's a big change.  Work up from the PW thru 8I and get in a groove on the range with these and then move into the longer clubs.  The weight difference should work itself out.
