Wedge setup with 42 degree PW?

I apologize if this is a repeated question.

I recently got a set of Cobra LTDx irons which have very strong lofts. I am currently trying to pick out some wedges to fit my setup. I am fairly new to golf so I was only going to buy a GW and SW. With the Cobra PW being 42 degrees, I was considering getting a 48 and 54 degree wedge set. I have been reading online though and a lot of people are saying the 56 is a better choice for new golfers because you can make the ball stop faster on the greens.

Any recommendations?

47-52-58

If you are just going to have a SW as your highest lofted club then you want a 56 as 54 probably won't be enough loft in certain situations. If you can fit the clubs I would suggest 48, 54, 58. You won't use the 58 to much but it's good to have in the bag and learn to use it.

Agree here. 48-54-58 is your best option for gapping. But you’ll probably need to learn to play a 3/4 PW shot to cover the range the 48 can’t quite carry to. If you like and need a high loft lob wedge, 42-48-54-60 is 6* gap between each but that’s a bit of a stretch and will probably leave awkward gaps. Rule of thumb is 4-5* as a degree or two can be 5 yards of carry.

I play 50-54-58 and it’s perfect for the approach swings and gives me flexibility to go high or low when pitching. I really only use the 54 in sand and back pins. The 58 is great for square shots and opening it up to front pins basically makes it a 60* and has plenty of height and spin.

Welcome to the wild world of WRX and the incredible sport of Golf @CheddarBob!

Agree with everyone who gave the advice of just looking at the 42* as a traditional 9-iron and build back from there.

I’d go 42-48-54-60 with 6* gaps.

That’s actually my next experiment I’m testing now, I’ve got a 42* 9-iron and picked up a 48* SM9 to go with my 54* and 60*.

Agree with @ChipNRunthat a 58* LW can be more versatile than a 60* wedge, especially for full swings, and also that it’d be easier to learn how to use the LW in Year 2-3 of learning the game. But if you have all the tools you need up front in Year 1, you can get to learn how to use the LW alongside learning your other clubs too.

I personally just prefer 60* LW’s over 58* because I learned how to play with a 60* as my highest lofted club and prefer the added spin and creativity I can use with that club over a 58* (I don’t use a LW as a full-swing club).

At the end of the day though, you have to find the equipment and solutions that will work best for you, and no 2 players are exactly the same…we’re all unique.

I agree with many others and would follow your 42 with a 46, get the set gw if you can.

After the 46 I think you can go in 2 different directions and to me it depends on how your mind works and see things:

1) 2 wedges-less wedges to choose from but you will need to create more shots with each wedge.

2) 3 wedges-more wedges to choose from but shots can be more linked/dedicated to each wedge.

I would suggest you decide on a direction first and then choosing the lofts will become much simpler. As for loft suggestions for 2 wedges after a 46 I would go 50/56 or 52/58. With 3 wedges after a 46 I would go 50/54/58 or 52/56/60.

One last thought, if you are on a tight budget or are not ready to get so many clubs at once I’d still get the set gw and a specialty 56 wedge. You can learn to hit a tremendous amount of different shots just with those and have plenty of fun golfing.

Everyone has a different opinion (clearly) but if you’re a new golfer just get the Cobra LTDx in 6i thru GW then add a single 52 or a 54 specialty wedge and be done with it. Everyone is different and the short game is complicated, but for most ams I know, bagging a 56 and/or 60 will do little more than make you hate golf. YMMV.
