What's in that pie crust?  The best ones are made with lard.  I make two pies a year... one in August (a peach pie) and one in September (an apple pie).

Pork shoulder came off the smoker about 10 minutes ago. Letting it rest for an hour or 2. Time to kick back on a Friday afternoon.

Been in and out all day! And just about every day that I’m home. It’s been too hot to play or go to the range, so my net is the only hitting option lately. Humidity is supposedly to drop next week, so even though it will be over 100° every day, I’ll probably get out to a local course.

 

I’m really anxious about trying out some swing changes. Feels great into the net, but will have to see actual results on the course.

Just a regular store bought crust and then she uses a cream cheese base.

I played yesterday and quit after 11 holes. it was 113* and after sitting in the shade waiting for the groupie front to finally clear the fairway, standing on the tee in bright full sun I felt just a little dizzy. So went back to the cart in the shade and it went away but I ain't taking chances at my age and called it a day. Never had ventilated cool seats and can't describe how much I appreciated them getting into a hot car and headin' home.

 

...With the next six days at 114*-117*-117*-116*-115* and 115* I won't be playing for awhile. Heading to Portland the 23rd - 27th so hopefully the Monsoons finally arrive and the rain cools things of while I'm gone. This heat really sucks but still much better than winter in Chicago.

Believe it or not, our winters haven't been real bad lately. We only had a total of a couple weeks where it was bad the last two winters. Still too cold to golf though. 😅

It tastes SO good! Even though pork butt is supposed to be an easy cook, it never tasted right to me until I finally found an eastern Carolina recipe that I modified a little to add some kick to the sweetness.

When does it cool off for you? October is by far the best golfing month in DFW. Usually temps in the 70s and 80s, dry and we’re still in Daylight Savings Time. I hate it when the clock rolls back, as it’s during prime golfing season here and the sun is already starting to set early.

... By the end of September it is back around 95-100. 95* with low humidity is really nice. October is good playing weather but every course here over seeds changing the grass and shuts down for 2 - 3 weeks. Mostly kinda shaggy when they reopen but they stagger the weeks so usually decent courses are available. Nov-April is just heavenly with very low humidity and lots of 65-80* temp days and a few chilly mid 50's mixed in. It's only mid June through mid August that can brutal. That said, this summer we are breaking quite a few heat records.

I usually don’t wear shoes when hitting into the net because I’m constantly jumping into the pool to cool off. A few minutes ago, it was getting too hot to stand on the hitting mat. I used an laser thermometer to get the temp. It had hit 178° before a small cloud came over for a few minutes. This was measured shortly after sun came out from behind the cloud.

... I grew up in the South and never got used to Chicago winters. I hate the cold and anything below 45* is too cold for me. But maybe worse is the trees and shrubs that look dead, the gray skies that can be present for 30 days without sunshine just puts me in a dour mood. Kinda like my personality hibernates with the trees. But glad to hear it has been milder than usual for you guys!

... Just brutal. When grilling I use an oven mitt because the stainless steel handle only weber gets too hot to touch.

It’s not the cold so much for me as the gray skies that you describe. My son, DIL and grandson live just outside Seattle. It’s absolutely gorgeous for a couple of summer months, but October - May seems to always be gray and dark.  Our grandson’s birthday is in October and it’s always cold and rainy when we visit.
