New Random Golf Club Bags

here are some pics!

I have standard length clubs, so the wedges come right to the top of the bag, no issue for me as they don’t fall into the bag at all.

The only Penfold logo is the metal plate near the handle, and this was a super selling point for me.  The other two colorways that Penfold offers has the big logo on the pocket, so very happy that this bag has a clean/logo-less look.

x-divider is sweet and just one big pocket with a clip to attach your keys.

hope this helps!

Looks perfect, thanks!  Agree regarding Penfold logo.  Is there a logo embossed on bottom of bag like website shows?

About how much do the upper pockets hold?  Maybe just a wallet, scorecard holder, etc?  Thin items so to speak?

No spine, correct?  Does that differ from Jones and MacKenzie bags - do they have spines?

Sorry for all the questions!

no worries about the questions- happy to help!

yes- upper pockets are slim just for the essentials.  Website says velour lined, but I would say sof-lined, like the cloth you clean your sunglasses with.  I was expecting fuzzy-wuzzy lining.

correct- no spine on this bag.  The Jones player series and Mackenzies have the spines.

Penfold is taking care of me, they shipped out another bag as the first one seems to be lost for good in the USPS system.  Should be here in a couple days.  If the lost one shows up unexpectedly I 100% will return it unopened.

@weavej1 that looks nice, and pretty much what I want in a simple lightweight carry bag as the weather starts getting lousy here.  You sure that blue is synthetic?  🤔  Bummer if so, but I sure don't expect a MacKenzie for $135.

I see you with the 412 putter cover ha ha.  I'll look for you and that bag around here.  Do the same -- we shouldn't be hard to spot.

This is my first, but I am going to guess "not so waxy".  I would like to know your thoughts when you eventually get your back, and if you do end up putting a wax treatment on it - i need those details too!

I use the wax from Filson, but I'm sure you can get wax from Amazon for a lot less.  It is not necessary since I don't commute on foot in bad weather any more, but it makes the bag look great.  Easy to do, just get an old rag that is as non-absorbent as you can find and rub a small amount of wax into the canvas all the way around.  If it's not penetrating the canvas the way you want, heat it with a hair dryer.  Don't overdo the wax or it will feel sticky and rub off on your clothes.  Give it a little while to dry and you'll see, your bag is nearly totally waterproof now.

Here's my old Filson bag, it's about 20 years old and has a ton of airline miles on it.  The more I drag it, stuff it, shove it kick it, etc., the better it looks.  Man, if Filson made golf bags that would be trouble.  😄

Got the bag and got it all loaded up.  Observations:

My clubs are very long so any carry bag is going to be top-heavy since I won't carry excessive balls just for ballast.  It's no big deal, just have to be careful when I pick up so I don't dump the bag.

No spine.  The X shaped club divider is pretty handy.  I carry 12 clubs, all with huge grips.  An 8" bag like this is big enough to work.  I would not go any smaller.

The leather trim.....um.....it might be leather, but it's so heavily treated it's no longer recognizable as such.  It might be pleather.  Definitely not MacKenzie or Eliott, but it was also $135 shipped.  The "waxed canvas" is funny.  Not sure you could call it that.  It's canvas all right, but I have waxed items from Filson, Barbour, and others, and this isn't the same.  I don't think it's waxed at all.  But again, for $135 I'll hit it with a bottle of Scotchguard and call it good.

Should be a good walking bag to stay warm as the weather starts to get grey and wet and cold here!

glad you got your bag!  Good call on the scotchguard- when you explained the wax treatment I was thinking to myself that it might take a long time lol.

For 135 shipped- not a bad buy!

Took a couple hours to do that briefcase the right way. A golf bag would take a while!

I did test a small area on the bag. The canvas is just slightly rougher and looser….and sucked the wax up like a sponge! So, it would take a helluva lot of wax to treat the whole bag. No way I’m tackling that. Scotchguard will do just fine.

on sale for $139, now.  It is tempting, but, I bought a Honma Sunday bag, which, I haven't used yet. My carrying days are probably over, but, I figured the Honma Sunday bag would be good for travel.

The Camino bags look good too, just not sure if they're still an active company???

Interesting, it does seem like they're all sold out. They were all over my social media for a few months earlier in the year.

That looks pretty good. A bit more orange than I thought (which I don't mind). One improvement it seems they've made over the blue / brown version they had earlier in the year is the badge is no longer shiny. The shiny badge really didn't contrast well imo.  Will be curious how the lighter colors hold up as a bag that sits on the ground.

It’s not all that orange IMO — it’s pretty close to a washed out red, have heard it called a Nantucket Red (??) before. The orange is the lighting in my home office because of an area rug I’m standing on that’s primarily orange.

I drenched the bag in Scotchguard yesterday so it’s good to go. May be able to get a walking round in this week….or at least nine.

Any additional info in the RGC carry bag?  Can get one for $150 now, intrigued

Is there a discount code?

Also, Camino has stock again. They changed there design to have a spine now, and some other minor adjustments.

They were on for $159 for black Friday. Guessing they may do again for boxing day or they do run codes on social too.

There's a 10% code for text signup.  I ordered a Camino when one was on ebay for cheap, wasn't a fan of that one.

Curious, what didn't you like about the Camino?

Felt unbalanced with the clubs loaded, the handle on the spine was real rigid/uncomfortable, and just overall it felt kind of cheap even for thr price point.

I have the Camino bag and have to say I was blown away by the quality for the price.  I have an older Mac and was considering a new one, but decided to give the Camino a try due to the price difference.  I was shocked at how nice the fit and finish of the Camino and it carries great and balanced.  Don’t think you will find a better value than the Camino for what you get, but I don’t have any experience with the Penfold.

Thanks 👍

Came down to the penfold, Jones rover, and this. Didn't like the idea of plastic strap connection on the Jones, penfold wasn't a color I liked so took a swing at the Camino.  Didn't want to spend to much dipping my toe into the no stand set up.  Liked the look of the materials and overall design on Camino.  I ordered but haven't got it yet.  Plan is to carry 8 with a water bottle in the pocket so hope carries well 🤞

Played a few rounds toting the Penfold. I’ve always loved the custom or custom-look single strap 8“ bags with no advertising. I was a caddie when Peter Jacobsen came out with the very first Mackenzie bag, and I’ve owned Eliott (sadly, no longer making bags), and some others. Grabbed the Penfold because it looked neat and was not very expensive. It is okay but nothing unique. The canvas seems average quality. Zippers are not real smooth, and if that blue pleather trim was once leather, it was lifetimes ago. Overall it’s about what I’d expect for the price.

I love carrying the lightweight single strap bags with minimal pockets. You just don’t need to carry a lot of stuff to play golf. I’m glad I didn’t decide to pony up for the leather Mac I’ve always wanted. My clubs are so long that my bag is major top-heavy, and I have to think too much about not letting the bag dump. Easy to dump it when picking up, and it wants to tip while being carried too. Can prevent it of course but takes too much attention.

I need to stick with a small, lightweight double strap when I carry, or just use my trusty push cart.
